Vandaag had ik een doel zoals vele reporters dit met mij delen; kebab scoren. Helaas blijkt dat voor mij toch nog steeds een flinke uitdaging in Utrecht. Ik wist dat de Amsterdamsestraatweg een groot percentage kebabzaken moest hebben, dus vandaag sprong ik samen met Vriendin nummer B in de bus om dit aan een oordeel te onderwerpen.
Ik wist dat Bert er al een aantal gerecenseerd had, maar gezien de grote hoeveelheid zaken moest er toch ten minste één aan mij besteed zijn. Dacht ik.
Vol goede moed sprongen wij de bus uit en begonnen aan de wandel. Een aantal dichte zaken, maar gezien het middaguur niet getreurd. Vele kebab zaken openen pas tegen 12.30, 13.00 de deuren. Ondertussen via de telefoon toch maar de site checken om te zien wat er al langs de revue gepasseerd was. Efes? Ja. Baba? Ja. Turkuaz? Ja. Saray? Ja. Emmi XL? Nee! Of wacht, ja toch wel. Pasa dan? Ja. Met iedere stap die ik deed begon ik Bert verder te vervloeken.
Vriendin nummer B en ik liepen verder. Bij het aanzicht van Christine le Duc riep B.: “Tja, als je nou echt geen kebab weet te vinden kun je jezelf tenminste nog op andere manieren bevredigen hier.” Toch, dat was niet het doel. Wij liepen verder langs Slavische markten (verassend genoeg zonder Slaven), cyberwaserettes (wat dat ook moge zijn) en zaken waar ze standbeeldjes variërend van dolfijntjes tot ‘De Dikke en de Dunne’ verkopen. Vooral bij het aanzicht van een hondensalon die comic sans had uitgekozen voor hun naambordje kwam ik toch tot de conclusie dat ik de Amsterdamsestraatweg als ‘knullig’ moet omschrijven. Je vindt er ALLES, maar heel vaak ook erg knullig.
Maar goed, wij liepen verder. En nog even verder. Langs de Watertoren. En nog een stuk verder. Bij het einde aangekomen smste ik Bert: “Is er dan verdomme niets meer over op de Amsterdamsestraatweg?!”. Geen reactie. B. en ik besloten dan maar weer helemaal terug naar het begin van de straatweg te lopen onder het motto; ‘misschien zit daar nog iets.’ Ondertussen mompelde ik iets over het feit dat als ik mijn broer nu zou tackelen het waarschijnlijk onder ‘huiselijk geweld’ zou vallen ipv ‘stoeien’ en dat het soms toch jammer is dat we allebei volwassen zijn inmiddels.
Aangekomen aan de andere kant van de straatweg belde ik een vriend die hier woont om te vragen of hij wist of er nog nieuwe zaken waren. “Jawel, de Side! Rond nummer 300 of zo, geloof ik!” Ah. Een van de dichte zaken. Maar, aangezien we inmiddels alweer een half uur verder waren (de Amsterdamsestraatweg is een lange straat) liepen we toch maar weer terug naar waar we vandaan kwamen. Dat was dus drie keer de straatweg à 5 km, de calorieën van het broodje hadden we er in ieder geval alvast af gelopen. Maar goed, de Side dus. En jawel, hij was open! Stuiterend -en onderling besluitend dat we mogelijk iets tè enthousiast waren over onze aankomende kebab- liepen we snel naar binnen. “Twee keer een broodje kebab alstublieft!” “Shoarma?” “Nee, kebab!” “Die heb ik niet. Over een uur.” … Het was dat het zo zonnig was, anders waren Vriendin nummer B en ik in een dramatisch gebaar op onze knieën in de regen gezakt. Een uur later moesten wij namelijk noodgedwongen ergens anders zijn, dus ook de Side viel af. Het feit dat de man weigerde om kebab te verkopen van een spit wat nog niet klaar was, was uiteraard wel bemoedigend. Bij deze, van de week recenseer ik de Side. Bert, durf me voor te zijn en ik bak je.
Terwijl B. en ik weer afdropen naar de andere kant van de straat (afdaling nummer vier…) richting bus huiswaarts, belde Ma CA. Ze zou vanavond bij me komen eten en we moesten even overleggen hoe of wat. Terwijl ik haar aan de lijn had meldde zij dat vrienden een zak kebabchips uit Frankrijk hadden meegenomen en dat die òf voor mij, òf voor Bert was. Onmiddelijk begon ik te schreeuwen. “VAN MIJ! Nee! Niets mee te maken! Van mij!” En zo geschiedde.
“Bret’s chips saveur Kebab. Sans conservateur, sans colorant artificiel”. Helaas ook sans groenvoer, brood of bijgeleverde sauzen. Vol spanning opende ik de zak. Ribbelchips. Ma CA en ik probeerde een chipje. Tja. Niet meer warm. Wel lang genoeg gegrild. De toevoeging van aardappel in mijn kebab was nieuw voor me. Pittig? Neuh. In principe veredelde bolognese chips, maar dan met wat minder tomaat. Iets peperiger. De prachtige ui, rode kool en tomaat op het afgebeelde broodje op de zak proefde ik niet terug. Werkt wel goed met wat knoflooksaus als dip, maar die moet je dus zelf aanleveren.
Zodra ik de zak omdraaide lachte mij een vrolijke boer tegemoet. Tja, zag er wat Frans uit, niet Turks. De ingrediënten stonden in het Frans, Arabisch en Engels vermeld. Nu is mijn Frans niet geweldig en mijn Arabisch erbarmelijk, maar mijn Engels voldoet. De ingrediënten zijn dus als volgt: “Aardappelen, zonnebloemolie, kebabsmaak basis [kruiden: paprika – koriander – peper – komijn – gember – nootmuskaat – aromatische planten: uien poeder – knoflookpoeder – gedroogde basilicum, kruiderij], zout.
Goede chips? Joah. Een heuse kebab ervaring? Faal. Mocht je ooit in Bretagne zijn en zin hebben in chips zal ik hem je niet afraden, maar de echte kebabliefhebber kan beter doorlopen.
En Bert? Ja, die vind ik nu mijn honger gestild is weer aardig. Dat tackelen was me toch niet gelukt.
