Een flink stuk op weg maar het einde is nog steeds niet in zicht. Jawel, dit stuk gaat alweer over een toko op de Amsterdamsestraatweg.
Tijdens een van mijn laatste dronken escapades werd ik lam genoeg wakker om zonder pet het huis van een maat van mij te verlaten. Wat dat aangaat ben ik net een jood of een moslim vrouw. Zonder hoofdbedekking mag ik eigenlijk niet over straat. Het werd dus hoog tijd de pet op te halen. Aangezien ik meerdere van dezelfde petten heb kan het ook gezien worden als een slecht excuus een broodje kebab in Utrecht te gaan eten.
De kebabzaak die ik deze keer ging testen was Saray. Volgens mij een vrij nieuwe toko in deze straat maar misschien zit ik daar wel compleet naast. Van binnen heeft het een nette inrichting dat door een half glazen wand word gescheiden van de balie. Echt een soort klein restaurant idee. Opvallend hoeveel de inrichting kan zeggen over hetgeen je verwacht te krijgen aan voedsel. Als de verkoper daar extra aandacht aan besteed zal hij ook wel bovengemiddeld zijn best doen op het eten. Absoluut geen feit maar over het algemeen toch iets wat vaak wel opgaat. Aan het spit hing een mooie grote rol te draaien en ik bestelde een “klein” broodje to go voor de goede prijs van 3 euro. De oudere Turkse man achter de toonbank vroeg of ik nog 5 minuutjes had zodat het vlees op zijn lekkerst geroosterd zou zijn. Ondertussen schoof hij de kachel wat meer naar het vlees om dit proces te bespoedigen. Uiteraard had ik daar geen problemen mee. Enkele minuten later werden een broodje, vlees en sla (ja, alles) samengevoegd en voorzien van aluminiumfolie, sausjes, servet en tasje en ik kon weer op weg naar de pet om daar hopelijk te gaan genieten.
Genieten dat heb ik gedaan. Dit broodje hoorde bij de bovenste regionen van het goede gemiddelde. Het broodje was helaas niet meer heel erg krokant maar dat had ik aan mijzelf te danken. Broodjes hoor je eigenlijk direct op te eten en niet in folie mee te nemen. Zelfs niet voor een paar honderd meter. Vandaar ook dat je geen kebab moet laten bezorgen. Voor een klein broodje was het zeer goed gevuld. Het vlees was erg lekker, goed gekruid en uitstekend geroosterd. De extra paar minuten hadden hun werk goed gedaan. De salade bestond uit sla, wortel, tomaat, komkommer en mais. Vooral dat laatste vond ik leuk. Niet dat ik een mais liefhebber ben. (Mais verlaat mij meestal in dezelfde vorm als dat het erin gaat) maar vind het ook niet vies. Qua smaak voegde het ook niet heel erg veel toe. Misschien was het de extra kleur in het broodje waar ik blij van werd of gewoon de keuze van de verkoper om wat extra’s te doen en zich te onderscheiden van het gros. Ik kom dit namelijk niet vaak tegen. De knoflooksaus was ik ook weer erg over te spreken. Deze was niet standaard, de sambal wel. Lekker broodje dus en eigenlijk had ik hem daar binnen moeten eten. Was het broodje zonder enige twijfel ook nog goed geroosterd geweest.
