De zomerhit van 2007 lijkt dan toch te zijn geboren: Mange du Kebab van Lil’Maaz, ook wel dj Kebab genoemd.
Lil wie? Lil’Maaz, kebabverkoper te Parijs. Zijn liedje Mange du Kebab (‘eet kebab’) is deze week op single verschenen.
Maar het nummer, met bijbehorende hilarische videoclip, is al langer een grote hit op internet – in amper een maand tijd haalde het bijna 450.000 hits.
Wat is het verhaal achter de zingende kebabverkoper? Platenmaatschappij EMI vertelt het zo.
Vier jaar geleden kwam de Turkse immigrant Yilmaz Karaman naar de Franse hoofdstad Parijs, waar hij een baantje in een grillroom vond. Tijdens zijn werk verzon hij een eigen liedje: „Eet kebab, eet kebab, mijn vriend.” Dat hoorden enkele medewerkers van EMI, wier kantoor naast de grillroom ligt en die daar tussen de middag een broodje kebab kwamen halen. Ze brachten Karaman naar een van hun studio’s en namen zijn liedje op.
Mange du Kebab is een zonnig, zomers nummer, dat hiphop met oriëntaalse invloeden mengt. Lil’Maaz rapt daar overheen. Het liedje blijft direct in het hoofd hangen – een voorwaarde voor een zomerhit.
In de video dansen de Turkse immigrant en zijn collega’s tussen toonbank en vleesspit als waren zij heuse hiphoppers – voor de gelegenheid heeft Lil’Maaz een vuistdikke gouden ketting om zijn nek. De klanten zwaaien vrolijk mee.
Lil’Maaz vertelde tegen een journalist van persbureau AP „duizelig” te zijn van het onverwachte succes. „Ik heb dat liedje alleen gezongen om de mensen aan het lachen te maken. Ik had niet verwacht dat het een hit zou worden.”
Onduidelijk is of hij zijn baan als kebabverkoper nu opgeeft. Immers, tegenover het persbureau verklaarde hij: „Ik hou nog steeds van mijn kebab.”
