Soms kom je op een plek en waan je je weer in de jaren tachtig. Troosteloosheid, daklozen, goedkope winkeltjes. Volgens mij hebben alle stations in Nederland zo undertussen wel een upgrade gehad, zelfs Utrecht CS en Hoog Catherijne doen niet meer denken aan de tijd dat het de hoofdstad voor gebruikers en mensen zonder thuis was. Dit alles is nog niet gaande op station Déli pályaudvar in Boedapest. Dit station ademt nog zwaar een jaren tachtig gevoel uit. Een beetje Duits, een beetje oostblok. Als ik eerlijk ben vind ik dat best tof. Rauw en vies. Maar het rook er wel goed, het rook er naar kebab. En flink ook.
Ik had er eigenlijk wel vertrouwen in hier een goed broodje te krijgen. Het rook écht goed (al kan dat ook door de flinke trek komen) en eerdere ervaringen in Boedapest waren ook goed. De zaak waar ik een broodje besloot te gaan halen heet Döner kebab express. Mooi, we hadden best haast dus een broodje kebab graag, en snel. Tot mijn grote verbazing hadden ze alleen broodjes gyros. Ja echt. Lees de naam van de zaak nog eens terug? Nee, je hebt het niet verkeerd gelezen. Ik ook niet. En dan toch alleen gyros. Gelukkig lust ik dat ook, maar een beetje vreemd is het wel. Ik kreeg het broodje wel vrij rap, en echt duur was het volgens mij ook niet te noemen. Het zal ongeveer 2,50 geweest zijn, in euro’s. Het broodje had zo’n koddig afgesneden stukje pita als ehh, als wat eigenlijk? Versiering, vermoed ik. Doen ze hier wel vaker. Misschien bedoeld om de saus nog ergens van af te vegen.
Maar goed, een broodje gyros van de Döner Kebab express. Hoe smaakt dat? Nou, niet naar gyros. Ook niet naar kebab. Het smaakt naar een pita met kip en groente. Goede groente, dat wel.
Maar goed, een broodje kip dat als gyros wordt verkocht door de Döner Kebab express, hoe eet dat? Lastig. Het nepbroodje dat we beter kennen als pita brak. Toen was ik er wel klaar mee. Snel de metro in. Twee schapen, waarvan een omdat ze het station verrijken met een geur die wél lekker is.
