Tussen neus en lippen door opperde Bas dit plan vorig jaar. Het was ergens op een feestje, en ik nam het niet te serieus. Het klonk echt als zo’n plan dat je op een feestje verzint maar waar nooit wat van terecht komt. Gelukkig bleek dit plan echter bloedserieus en afgelopen weekend was het dan eindelijk zover.
Redelijk fris namen we een uurtje of 7 ’s morgens bezit van een treinwagon. Tot Duitsland waren we de enige in die wagon, een mooie manier van reizen. Je kan zeggen wat je wilt, maar reizen met Duitse treinen is al jaren niet zo’n ramp meer als dat het ooit was. De tijd werd benut met het strategisch blijven plannen van onze missie, wat geouwehoer en wat naar buiten staren. En de eerste biertjes natuurlijk. Voor we het wisten waren we in Berlijn.
Hup, de taxi in, richting hotel. Hoewel het voor mij slechts de tweede keer in Berlijn was (ik schaam me nog steeds diep) voelde het gelijk al vertrouwd. Geen tijd verspillen in het hotel, er moesten zaken gedaan worden. Het eerste broodje was voor Bas, en het was er gelijk een van Duitse degelijkheid. Het was duidelijk, dit ging een goede tour worden. Een lichte ongeduldigheid maakte zich van mij meester, een beetje zoals een kind de dag voor Sinterklaas. Ook mijn maag verdiende dit soort broodjes! Gelukkig was de invasie zorgvuldig gepland en duurde het nog geen half uur voordat het mijn beurt was.
Eerlijk is eerlijk, ik was een klein beetje teleurgesteld toen ik mijn broodje kreeg. Oke, de rol zag er fantastisch uit, en het was geen kip. Maar de Duitse extra’s bleven uit. Ik was even vergeten dat ik niet gelijk moet oordelen. En er een reden was dat ik deze tent mocht doen. Er stonden alleen maar hoog aangeschreven tenten op de lijst, dus niet miepen nou Jan, zet die tanden in het broodje en ga het ervaren.
Een ervaring was het. Zoals die typische Mustafa saus een ervaring an sich is. Niet dat die saus op dit broodje te vinden was, nergens voor nodig ook. Hier gaat het om het vlees. Dat vlees! Gemarineerd in yoghurt, naar het schijnt. Specerijen. MALS! De gedachte aan rendang vlees was moeilijk te onderdukken, maar dan wat meer kebabachtig. Niet te vergelijken met welk broodje kebab dan ook. Oh jongens, dat vlees. Wat een goed vlees zeg. De extra’s waren dan ook overbodig, wat sla en tomaat waren meer dan genoeg. Ook het broodje was vrij simpel, met dit soort vlees hoef je ook geen bijzonder broodje te hebben. Allemaal afleiding. Ik had moeite om het broodje niet helemaal op te eten, wat helaas toch echt de bedoeling was. Ik ben ook maar eens mens, en 5 hele broodjes op één dag leek me wat veel. Dus ik moest met pijn in mijn hart voortijdig afscheid nemen van dit broodje. De toon was gezet, die Duitsers lieten ons gelijk al zien dat ze de kunst van het goede broodje kebab als geen ander verstaan.
