De laatste jaren ben ik elk jaar minimaal één keer in Athene geweest, vaak meerdere keren en veelal voor de meesterlijke broodjes.
Op Youtube bekeek ik alle interessante vlogs over deze stad en irriteerde me elke keer aan het gebrek aan kennis van de vloggers en de standaard tenten die ze bezoeken.
Het is altijd hetzelfde rijtje aan toeristenbende: STANI voor ontbijt, LOUKOUMADES van zo’n tent die bij ons stroopwafels zou doen, weet je wel, van die oplichters. DIPORTO voor de authentieke Griekse vreetervaring en het kunnen krijsen tegen al je vrienden dat er een oud opaatje stond en ze hadden geen menu en houten wijn tonnen tegen de muur en geen bord buiten. Alsof je iets unieks ontdekt dat niemand anders weet, zoooooo authentiek allemaal! behalve dat het gewoon kanker is waar iedereen komt en elk vlog, blog of lonely planet er vol mee staan.
Dat is ook zo qua souvlaki, gyros en kebabs.
Iedereen en hun moeder gaan naar dezelfde tenten.
Allemaal naar Thanassis op het Atheense Leidseplein ‘Monastiraki’.
Die tent heeft gewoon vijftig obers ofzo, zo druk is het. Bairaktaris is er tegenover en net zo druk en toeristy.
(Oh, ik heb Bairaktaris weleens gereport zie ik, maar schreef de naam verkeerd! M’n Grieks was nog niet toereikend genoeg om het goed te kunnen lezen/vertalen)
Ala, omdat ik me dus stoor aan de idiote vlogs over Athene, loop ik al tijden rond met het idee om er zelf een te maken voor Youtube, maar omdat ik superdom ouwehoer, wordt dat gewoon niks.
Ik kan dat wel in het Nederlands, maar het wordt gewoon knullig als ik dat in het engels doe.
Alleen maar ‘Fuck, this is awesome man!” en dat soort onzin. Als ik er ooit overheen stap, maak ik het alsnog en zal ik het jullie niet laten weten oké?
KOSTA dus. Niet te verwarren met O KOSTAS, wat een andere topper is in het genre.
KOSTA zit vlakbij HOOCUT en vlakbij Monastiraki, kortom, het is zeer goed te vinden als je een standaard, niks wetende, toerist bent in Athene.
Deze tent gaat open om pakweg 10:00 en sluit als het vlees op is. Dit geldt overigens voor bijna alle toptenten hier. Of nou, VOLVI sluit tussen 21:30 en 22:30, Lefteris gaat dicht als de boel op is en HOOCUT en KAPSA zijn gewoon open als normale winkels.
Er zit nog een bekende tent precies in dat stukje straat, TYLIXTO, die kan vermeden worden heeft het internet me verteld.
God, ik ben afgeleid.
Ik bezoek KOSTA meestal als het tijd is om de dag te starten.
Dan weet je dat je niet in de rij hoeft te gaan staan en buiten dat; het werkt supergoed als ontbijt!
Een kleine pita met een kalamaki of een bifteki, de speciale KOSTA saus erover, wat een soort hete tomatensaus is. Wel even ‘HORIS PATATES’ erbij zeggen trouwens. Colaatje. Even buiten zitten met de zon in je gezicht terwijl je dit feestje naar binnen werkt.
Super mals, super saus, super service, super spot, super stad, super alles.
