Een verhaal van Bert en Bob
“Bert, vind je dat we hier een verslag van kunnen schrijven?”
“Ik vind van wel pa, hij adverteert met kebab.”
“Maar we hebben helemaal geen kebab gegeten!”
“Kan wezen, maar we hebben voldoende ons best gedaan.”
Bob en Bert gaan soms samen sporten. Liefst in grote plassen water, zoals de Meerse Plas in Den Dungen. Op weg naar deze plas kom je door Maaskantje. Althans, als je het weet, want alle plaatsnaamborden zijn allang gestolen. De grote Noordwest Europese Gids van Kebabuitbaters in Landelijke Gebieden meldt echt Chez Huub als “the place to be” als je bij den Dungen kebab wil.
De keuze Maaskantje was dus volstrekt logisch. Als deze beroemde snackbar namelijk echt kebab verkoopt dan hoort er een verslag op de site! Aangekomen in het beroemde dorp lopen we onmiddellijk vast in allerlei dranghekken. Een man met op zijn jas “crowd controle” staat er eenzaam bij te kijken.
Veel verder komen we niet, want vandaag wordt in het centrum van Maaskantje een groene manta opgeblazen voor New Kids Nitro. Foto’s mogen niet gemaakt worden. Althans, bewaker nummer zoveel, brult dat er geen opnamen gemaakt mogen worden. “Da’s lastig als je een film wil maken”, stelt Bert, waarna we ons snel terugtrekken, want de enige snackbar van het dorp komt in beeld.
Voor de mongols van New Kids: ja jôngguh ut zeit “Snackbar ut Plainzje”.
Het personeel moppert, de straten zijn al tijden afgezet en het is stil in DE snackbar. We vragen om kebab maar dat blijken ze dus niet te hebben. Een spit evenmin.
Het wordt tijd dat we afrekenen met website-misleiders die ons lokken met kebab. Adverteren is leveren, of hier een aantekening. Hetgeen wel geleverd kan worden is shoarma of gyros. En aangezien een goed bereide gyros gezien kan worden als the best next thing besluiten we deze te bestellen en ons op te maken voor verslag
“Twee gyros, twee cola”. De vrouw achter de balie verdwijnt richting diepvries. Eigenaar Hubert voegt zich bij haar. Twee zakken gesneden vlees verdwijnen op de bakplaat.
Ondertussen komt de ene Duitser na de ander binnen. De bestellingen zijn pom-turbosaus of knoepert. De bediening past zich aan het internationale karakter aan. “Doe you want this wit saus? That’s drie euro vifty” Als de Duitsers dat niet snappen wordt de Amerikaanse methode gehanteerd: “If they don’t understand you just shout louder.”
Ondertussen bestudeert Bert de situatie buiten. Alles lijkt klaar voor de actie. Als het vlees gaar is worden de 2 obligate blaadjes sla, wat worteltjes en een schijfje komkommer toegevoegd. Er wordt een AH Pita broodje (maatje XS) opgelegd. “Gyros is toch met saus?” wordt ons gevraagd. Heel veel fouter dan deze plek krijg je het niet denken we, hoewel nauwelijks later blijkt dat we het dieptepunt nog lang niet bereikt hebben. Er is maar een lichtpuntje, ze zijn vreselijk aardig.
Bij de eerste hap is-dit-nu-shoarma-of-gyros-en-geef-me-goddomme-de-beloofde-döner-mongol, die we op het “terras” nemen, ontploft in de verte een groene opel manta en komt er een zwart exemplaar voorbij scheuren. Onmiddellijk gaan de dranghekken weg.
De Duitsers komen achter allerlei muurtjes en uit zijstraatjes tevoorschijn. Een groep fietsers met op het stuur geplastificeerde routekaarten stapt af. De leider brult “16 knoeperts, of wil iemand wat anders?” Eén vrouw vraagt “Wat is een knoepert”. “Da’s wat je thuis niet krijgt” wordt er terug gebruld.
Bert mag, als expert, het oordeel proberen uit te spreken en Bob naar huis rijden. De teleurstelling en opwinding zijn de oude man te veel. Als ze ooit echt aan de kebab beginnen komen we terug! Zonder mat, maar met stickers!
Bert: Tja wat kan ik hier nog over zeggen. Je verwacht kebab te kunnen krijgen en moet al genoegen nemen met gyros. Even voor de duidelijkheid. Gyros is uitstekend voedsel en voor de afwisseling zeker net zo smakelijk als kebab. Helaas bleek deze vorm het soort gekruid varkensvlees te zijn dat je bij de Albert Heijn koopt. In combinatie met de pita en de ijsbergsla scoor je bij mij dan geen punten. Zelfs niet als je voor die 5 euro een beste bak vol vlees krijgt. Dit heeft niks met het daadwerkelijke product te maken. Slechts een slappe imitatie (Das geen gyros KUT!!). Ik snap dat je in deze landelijke contreien voorzichtig moet zijn met wat je de boer voorschotelt en dat het vooral niet teveel van het bekende broodje shoarma moet afwijken. Maar ga dan ook niet op internet doen alsof je kebab verkoopt. Die film trekt al genoeg klandizie.
Ohja… de knoflooksaus was wel lekker
