Voor vanavond stond een gezellige maaltijd in de planning, met een aantal vrienden en goede bekenden. Toen de piloot de cockpit instapte en zei: ik heb mijn jasje maar even aangetrokken voor deze mededeling was het duidelijk: goede service, maar enorme vertraging. En zo bevind ik me rond etenstijd niet aan een diner, maar op het station van Nice aan de Côte d’Azur. Misschien is de kust blauw, de rest is bewolkt en nat. 
De voedselkeuze in de stationsstraat is deprimerend. Er is een broodjeszaak waar de broodjes schreeuwen “we waren ruim op tijd voor de lunch”, een Aziaat met ingedroogde buffetbakken en Flunch. Flunch is een keten in Frankrijk waar ik geen mening over heb, omdat ik weiger er binnen te gaan. Dit omdat het door Fransen is bedacht als tegenhanger van McDonald’s. En ze haten McDonald’s! Ik ben sowieso geen natuurlijk fan van Frans eten. Soms krijg je er een wereldmaaltijd, maar de galetten, bouillabaisse en doodgekookte groenten en laf vlees komen te vaak voor. En dankzij Michelin hebben ze toch een kapsones op dit punt.
En dan zie ik King Kebab, links van het station. Ook niet iets waar je huppelend heen loopt, maar in deze trieste omgeving lijkt het de meest risicomijdende keuze.
Er zitten mensen achter tafeltjes, en achter de bar binnen in de tent. Er staan zelfs nog twee klanten te wachten. Ook draait er een groot spit met heus schapenvlees.
“Un Donèr sans frites” vertel ik de Kebabber van dienst. “Op een galette” stelt hij vast. Ik overweeg te protesteren, maar heb nergens broodjes gezien. En er staat “durum” op het menu. Kebabber 2 zeilt ondertussen een galette over de toonbank. Hij mist, waardoor de pannenkoek tussen het verpakkingsmateriaal eindigt. Ze kijken niet eens op. Het lijkt deel van de “klant en voedsel, ik veracht u” act. Wat ik aan saus wil is het volgende punt. Ik ga voor alles. De jaren dat antwoorden van klanten werden opmerkt lijken lang vervlogen voor dit duo kebabber. Mijn antwoord wordt genegeerd.
Deze saus dus? Ik geef het op en zeg ja. Een durum met kruiden yoghurt is mijn deel.
“Ook Frites?” “Nee”, roep ik, “GEEN FRITES”.
Dus sla en tomaat? “EN OOK UI” bulder ik wijzend op de bak. Met een zucht wordt die toegevoegd.
Meenemen? De plasticzak en de aluminiumfolie zijn al gegrepen. “NON, ICI”. Het alternatief is tussen de daklozen op de natte grond voor het station zitten, dus het product wordt hier verwerkt.
Zuchtend legt hij het verpakkingsmateriaal weer weg. Nadat hij tot twee keer een deel van vulling uit de durum heeft laten donderen krijg ik er zowaar een dienblaadje bij.
Samenvattend: “This is not nice”. Slappe hap, te weinig gekruid, alleen de hoeveelheid vlees voldoet. € 5,20, inclusief een flesje water.
In het land der blinden is een-oog koning, maar deze King de Nice is geen Prince de Viande en zeker geen Roi de Kebab. Uitgaand van de Orkide Standaard krijgen ze geen schapen.

PS. Ik maakte de foto’s iets te zorgvuldig, they smelled a rat. Als ik het geheel bijna heb weggewerkt komt de kebabber naar buiten. Of het heeft gesmaakt? Met zijn kebabber mes en beheersing van de Franse taal heeft hij een duidelijk het thuisvoordeel. Ik lieg me er schaamteloos uit en vlucht naar mijn trein. Geroerd door mijn “C’est bon” wenst hij me een prettige avond en een fijne reis. Even overweeg ik een hertelling,maar je weet, als er één schaap over de brug is… King of Kebab “Pas de points”.
