Je hebt van die kebabzaken in Berlijn waar je bij elk bezoek aan deze stad voorbij komt, maar waar je intuïtief nooit naar binnen stapt. Totdat je op een donderdagochtend om een uur of vijf dronken over straat loopt en besluit om bij de eerste de beste kebabboer naar binnen te gaan.
Mijn gevoel laat mij zelden in de steek als het op kebab aankomt en dat bleek maar eens te meer. Alleen de toplocatie van deze tent deed mij al vermoeden dat hier magere broodjes werden verkocht. Zo gaat dat nou eenmaal vaak, ook in Berlijn.
Met een opkomend ietwat waterig zonnetje stapten we de kebabtoko binnen. We bestelden twee broodjes döner en pakten twee Kleine flesjes Berliner Pilsener uit de koelkast. Wat op zich al onnatuurlijk is aangezien ik normaal altijd Berliner Kindl drink en al helemaal geen kleine flesjes. Ik had eerlijk gezegd ook nooit eerder gezien dat er in Berlijn kleine flesjes bier worden verkocht.
Terwijl een van de kebabsnijders de restjes kebab van zijn stoep veegde en daarmee een kleine duiveninvasie veroorzaakte, zette we onverstoorbaar onze tanden in de inmiddels bereide broodjes vlees. Wat direct al opviel en ik stiekem wel had verwacht, was de zuinigheid waarmee het broodje belegd was. Weinig vlees, zelfs weinig salade. Moet ik er wel bij zeggen dat ik hier naar Berlijnse maatstaven reken. In Nederland zou het best een aardig broodje zijn.
Goed, we hadden behoorlijk honger, waren dronken en het betaalden slechts €2,50 per broodje. Nog niet echt reden tot klagen dus. Ware het niet dat het belangrijkste ingrediënt, het vlees, een rare smaak had. Niet vies, maar heel anders dan de rest van de Berlijnse broodjes. Ook de structuur was anders dan anders. Zelfs mijn tafelgenoot die heel wat minder kebabervaring heeft viel het op. Zwaar minpuntje dus.
Nou moet niet vergeten worden dat het een half uur voor sluitingstijd was en de reusachtige kebabrol die ze daar elke ochtend ophangen, was verworden tot een klein streepje vlees. Maar als het vlees niet goed is, wordt het nooit wat. En gezien het enorme aanbod in de hoofdstad van onze oosterburen zal je mij niet meer in deze tent aantreffen.
Ik had op het moment van testen overigens geen camera bij me dus bovenstaande foto heb ik de volgende dag genomen van een Amerikaan die daar een broodje zat te eten. Hij vond het een awesome, fucking, great ,nice sandwich dude. Waaruit maar weer eens blijkt wat een slechte smaak Amerikanen hebben.
