Inmiddels al weer even geleden was ik bezig om mijn postvak uit te harken. Deze postvakken bevinden zich in studentenhuisvesting en zijn dus bezaaid met 80.000 folders van fastfoodketens en feesten waar niemand echt heen wil. Ik gooide drie kilo achteloos vermoorde- en post-mortem beprinte- bomen met een nonchalante boog over mijn schouder in de oud-papiermand, die met enig vooruitzicht (en mogelijk medeleven voor de schoonmaker) gelukkig naast de postvakken in kwestie was neergezet.
Terwijl de, bijna gerecycelde en dus weer beschikbaar voor het beprinten met mededelingen over ‘vlijmscherp gereedschap’, ‘extra parmezaanse topping’ en ‘chille beats’, stapel folders met een plof terecht kwam tussen de honderden vergelijkbare folders van buren die er net zoveel interesse in toonden als ik, viel mij één advertentie ongelukkigerwijs tóch nog op. Domino’s Pizza leverde een medium pizza chicken kebab voor vijf euro. Of nou ja, €4,95. Dat is nét geen vijf, en dan worden onze hersenen weer mooi geprogrammeerd om geen ‘Dit is toch veel te duuuur?!’ alarmbellen af te laten gaan. Zo klinkt €1999,95 ook als veel minder dan €2000, toch? Nee, vind ik ook niet, maar onze mannen in de retail blijkbaar wel. Enfin. Ik braaf een pizza besteld, het is immers weer veel te lang geleden sinds ik mijn reporterlijke plichten vervuld heb.
Het EK was op dat moment in volle gang, hoewel Nederland niet speelde die avond betekend dat blijkbaar toch big business voor de bestelindustrie. Om vier uur bestelde ik het kreng, verwachtte aankomsttijd was 18:40. Dat werd uiteindelijk 18:45, en de pizzajongen was wat beteuterd dat ik al via iDeal betaald had en er dus geen fooi voor hem in zat. Tja, gooi het maar op die vijf minuten te laat zijn of zo, in werkelijkheid had ik gewoon geen zin om mijn kamer op zijn kop te keren om die vijf cent terug te vinden die de pizza nou net weer op zo’n mooi rond getal had doen eindigen. Gelukkig was de pizza nog wel warm bij aankomst.
De medium pizza is 25 cm in diameter. Dat blijkt minder te zijn dan ik in mijn hoofd had zitten. We gaan het maar niet hebben over de grootte van andere dingen die ik dus ook wel verkeerd in geschat zal hebben, het gaat hier over voedsel. 25 cm dus. Genoeg om me geen honger meer te laten hebben, maar ook niet genoeg om nog net lekker die twee stukjes pizza in de koelkast te kunnen leggen voor je ontbijt de volgende dag.
De korst was heerlijk en dik. Het beleg had van iedere andere pizza kunnen zijn; tomatensaus en kaas. Het vlees had eigenlijk geen zak met kebab te maken. Het waren dunne plakjes kip, ja, maar echt naar kebab smaken deed het niet. Er was nog wat knoflooksaus overheen gespoten, die was prima. Er was niets pittigs aan de pizza te bekennen.
Ik snap dat Domino’s bij wijze van ‘meegaan met de tijd’ het nodig vond om een kebabpizza te introduceren. Ook kan ik me voorstellen dat ze bij het vleesgebruik en het toevoegen van knoflooksaus het idee hebben daadwerkelijk een kebabpizza te leveren. Mits ze deze site nog nooit bekeken hebben, natuurlijk. Het was een lekkere pizza, bovendien voor iets wat aan huis geleverd werd niet erg duur. Met kebab zoals wij daarvan houden, echter, had het niets te maken.
