Zijn linkse neigingen ernstig? Het is mij duidelijk geworden dat je er in ieder geval soms te ver mee kunt gaan. Als ik in Brussel uit Hotel Aqua in Rue De Stassart kom sla ik links af. Eerder heb ik uitgelegd dat je dan lang kunt lopen voor je scoort. Na een paar jaar deze weg gepakt te hebben liep ik met een collega mee die voorstelde rechtsaf te slaan. De buurman van mijn hotel bleek een Iraans Kebab restaurant.
Onder het motto “het is zo leuk je eens te laten zien waar ik steeds logeer” had ik Ma CA meegelokt naar de Rue De Stassart bij Metrostation Naamse Poort. Nu is het een 100 in een dozijn hotel, dus zien is gezien hebben. In gestrekte draf liepen we door om op nr. 49 wat te eten.
Voor iedereen die uitsluitend broodjes Kebab van € 2,50 wil eten een waarschuwing: ga terug naar de homepage. (En voordat iemand me weer voor halal moslim uitmaakt: met een broodje van €2,50 hoeft niets mis te zijn, al moet het voor die prijs bijna uit China komen en met kinderarbeid zijn vervaardigd). Shuka is een restaurant en geen fastfood stek. These thrills cost money.
Het blijkt een schoon maar zeer eenvoudig restaurant te zijn. Personeel en bezoekers zijn duidelijk Iraans, of anderszins weggepesten uit die regio.
Het eerste wat opvalt is dat er geen rol is. Toch hebben we vertrouwen. Deels doordat we zeer vriendelijk worden ontvangen, waarbij de restauranthouder er op staat met ons het plaatjesboek dat het menu vormt door te nemen, deels omdat het druk is.
Ma CA kiest kip, ik ga voor lamsgehakt. Uit de koelvitrine worden vier spiesen gehaald. De trek neemt toe. De spiesen verdwijnen uit ons zicht op een energiebron. We bestellen er een schaaltje groenten en een bakje yoghurt saus bij.
Direct maar naar het oordeel: Een mandje met stukken lekker vers brood is voldoende om iedereen die dit koolhydraat product als hulpmiddel nodig heeft bij het weg metselen van kebab te ondersteunen. Daarnaast is er gele en witte rijst, die smaakt als gekookte rijst, maar optisch is het leuk. De energiebron moet een barbecue zijn, het vlees heeft die duidelijke bijsmaak. Verder is het vlees perfect gekruid. Er langs en over liggen verse groene kruiden. Veel peterselie, maar ook ander spul.
We wisselen wat vlees uit, en blijven er beiden bij dat we de juiste keuze hebben gemaakt. De groenten zijn ingelegd in zuur, en in de yoghurt saus zit ook nog een lading plantaardig materiaal, maar ook hier: alles even smakelijk. Het is alleen niet pittig. Had ik ook geen zin in, anders hadden we er volgens mij om kunnen vragen. De chef is drie keer langs geweest om te informeren of alles in orde was, waarbij hij al snel over ging in het Vlaams.
Alles bij elkaar een meer dan redelijke maaltijd. € 13 per persoon is voldoende om een reguliere kebab tent op te blazen (kijk der de krant maar op na, ze doen het dagelijks in die regio). Dit is echter een restaurant, geen durum uitgifte punt, en dan is de prijs voor het bord eten heel scha(a)ppelijk.
Kortom Shuka, I’ll be back. Voor de combinatie van vriendelijkheid, goed product en lollige stapeling van de rijst heb ik 4 schapen over. En omdat Ma CA haar kipspies net zo beoordeeld wordt dat toch al gauw een kleine kudde daar op de Strassaartstraat.
