22 december 2011, 12.48. Ik zit in de trein momenteel. Ik heb het heet, en ben buiten adem. Ik heb me net de longen uit mijn lijf gehold. In Groningen. Nu hoop ik dat dit als een soort lokkertje werkt en mensen vol interesse verder lezen. “Groningen?! Wat moet ze daar dan, afgelopen weekend hebben jullie daar toch al getourt? Wat moet iemand vrijwillig zo dicht bij Noorwegen en al die sneeuw als je er niet iets héél belangrijks te doen hebt? En waarom was je aan het rennen?” hoor ik jullie, mijn aandachtige lezers, denken. Nou, dat zal ik je vertellen. Terwijl de mensen in de trein wat verbaast naar mijn laptop vol kebabreporters stickers zitten te staren. Jazeker; reporter in action. In de trein van Groningen naar Utrecht. Wat een voorrecht. Nou jongens, ga er voor zitten, want dit wordt een pleuris lang verhaal.
Ok, Groningen dus. Iemand in ons team was op het achterlijke idee gekomen om weer eens een tour te regelen gezien de Hema met een prachtige NS-dagkaart actie op de proppen kwam. Iemand anders kwam op het mogelijk nog achterlijkere idee om dit in het grootste boerendorp van Nederland te doen, aangezien wij allemaal meer op de Randstad aangewezen zijn. ‘s Ochtends vroeg op de eerste dag van onze vakantie stonden Jan Beton en ik samen vol spanning op in een huis wat nog volledig in de duisternis gehuld was. Na wat heen en weer smsen met de andere reporters werd duidelijk we Bas, Tedje, Peter en W. in Amersfoort zouden zien, Bert zou ons in Groningen treffen. Een paar uur, wat bier en heel veel weilanden later en we konden Groningen, in mijn geval voor het eerst, met eigen ogen aanschouwen.
Onmiddellijk werden er overal foto’s gemaakt, in mijn geval met mijn brand-spanking-nieuwe iPhone die ik anderhalve dag eerder had ontvangen. Al mijn spaargeld zat in dat kreng en ik moest me inhouden om hem niet om de vijf minuten even tevoorschijn te halen en hem te aaien. Ik was daar niet erg succesvol in. Gezien niet iedereen voorzien was van camera heb ik ook voor een aantal andere reporters nog wat foto’s gemaakt die dag.
Nou, touren door Grunn, dus. Bertje had al snel de eerste tent te pakken. Vervolgens zag ik de tweede. Tedje Agga en ik holde er naartoe. “King of Kebap”, heette deze tent. Een gele voorkant met vrolijke gekleurde versiersels, een net interieur met donkergroene tegeltjes en een schoon aandoende balie. De zaak was versierd met een hele serie ‘Caribische’ en ‘Exotische’ feest aankondiging posters. Achter de balie hingen twee spitten te draaien; kip en kalf. De uitbater was bezig om tomaten en uien te snijden om op een van de twee spitten te prikken, de ander was al voorzien. God wat was dat een prachtig aanzicht.
Tedje en ik bestelde beiden een broodje kebab à €4,50. Prijzig, maar hier waren we op voorbereid. De saladebar beloofde ons extra’s, dus ik kon het hebben. Terwijl we wachten op ons broodje merkte ik dat het menu onderscheid maakte tussen een standaard broodje en één met extra’s. 50 cent extra. Nou ja, vooruit dan maar, terug naar de uitbater en die extra centen tevoorschijn toveren.
Het resultaat was een redelijk geroosterd Turks brood met kalfskebab, sla, ui, tomaat, komkommer, een pepertje, augurk en een grote dikke plak gepeperde feta. De knoflooksaus was aanwezig maar is me niet bij gebleven. De sambal was heerlijk pittig, precies sterk genoeg dat ik hem nog kan waarderen maar het het broodje wel een bite geeft. De verdeling was fantastisch. All-in-all gewoon een goed broodje waar je teveel voor betaald.
Onder het eten liepen wij naar buiten richting de rest van de groep, die inmiddels ook allemaal uitgerust waren met hun eigen broodjes. Blijkbaar hadden we het kebepicentrum van Groningen gevonden. Broodjes werden vergeleken, hapjes werden uitgedeeld, en al snel hadden we allemaal een idee wat Groningen ons kon bieden. Het kost mad duah, maar dan heb je ook wat. Ook hier maakte ik nog een prachtige foto, waar vijf reporters te zien waren met ieder een broodje in hun handen.
Nu waren we nog maar net begonnen, dus opgeven deden we niet. Door, verder de stad in. Iet wat uitwijken uit het centrum en we vonden nog her en der een zaakje of wat, mogelijk soa’s in het geval van Tedje, maar dat zal de tijd ons leren. Uiteindelijk besloten we het gros wel gehad te hebben, maar wij waren nog niet klaar met touren. Een gezamenlijke beslissing viel om nog door te gaan om ook Zwolle onder handen te nemen. “Eerst nog even bier halen voor de treinreis”, viel de opmerking, dus wij trokken naar de Albert Heijn op de vismarkt. Hier riep Jan Beton terecht dat de Groningers Albert blijkbaar zo sympathiek vonden dat ze maar een tempel voor hem neergezet hadden.
Terwijl de mannen binnen bier haalde bleef ik alleen buiten staan om een foto van de markt te maken. God wat was die iPhone sexy. Als je nog geen technofiel was zou je het hier van worden. Nou ja, ik ten minste.
De mannen voegde zich weer bij me en we liepen terug naar het station, een wandeling van plus minus vijf tot tien minuten. Daar voelde ik in mijn zak, en… iPhone weg. Godseklere, dat meen je niet. Panisch zakken doorzoeken. Rugtas checken. Nog een keer in zakken voelen. Nog een keer tas checken. Terug hollen naar de AH. Navragen. Niets. Jan belt me, telefoon uit. Gerold, dus. Fuck. Politiebureau? “Nee man, dan zit je twee, drie uur te wachten, dat schiet niet op.” “Tja ik zou kunnen wachten tot ik thuis ben… Nee, sorry, ik moet dit doen nu.” Met de hele groep door naar het politiebureau, en heeeey, een kebabzaak recht er tegenover! Het vermaak voor de mannen was dus ook meteen voorzien, gelukkig. Ik werd meteen geholpen, met een kwartier was de aangifte geregeld. “Nou, die anderhalve dag lol heeft me dus een paar meier gekost, lekker dan.”
Ik besloot het hele gebeuren maar even op de lange baan te schuiven en de tour niet volledig te laten verpesten. Toch nog maar naar Zwolle, waar ik jullie overigens later ook nog van een verhaal van ga voorzien.
Maar dan nu terugkomend op het feit waarom ik nu, vijf dagen later, weer in Groningen te vinden was, al rennend door de straten. Zoals sommigen van jullie misschien weten wil Apple alles van je weten. Zo ook waar je bent. De nieuwe iPhone is dus ook uitgerust met een functie genaamd ‘Find My iPhone’, wat een fucking geniaal systeem is als je een chaoot bent zoals ik. Tegen beter weten in aan het einde van de tour die functie eens aangezet. En de volgende ochtend, jawel, een mailtje van Apple. “Uw telefoon is gelocaliseerd.” Het kreng lag in een kast van een huis in een dorp in de buurt van Groningen! Ik de politie gebeld, rechercheur aan de telefoon die niet wist wat een jpg was, laat staan een iPhone, en ik mijn verhaal maar doen. Gelukkig was de man uiterst vriendelijk en hield hij me steeds op de hoogte. Vijf uur later lag mijn iPhone op het politiebureau met de belofte dat als de boef er afstand van zou doen ik hem terug zou krijgen. Weer een dag later kwam de melding dat de ‘boef’ mijn iPhone gevonden zou hebben. Riiiight.
Maar vandaag ben ik dus in alle haast, want ik moet over een half uur op mijn werk zijn in Utrecht, heen en weer gesjeesd om het kreng weer af te halen. Ondertussen geassisteerd door de NS, dus door de vertraging had ik welgeteld een half uur in Groningen om alles te regelen.
Het enige wat jammer is? Al die mooie foto’s zijn weg. Vandaar dat ik, zo goed en kwaad als het ging, heb geprobeerd om jullie te voorzien van deze kunstwerkjes om het allemaal nog een beetje kleur te geven.
