Verslag door Vriendin Nummer B
Wat een dag! Met zwetende handjes van puur anticipatoire opwinding pingde ik Delicatesther over de locatie van onze ontmoeting. Op station Leiden was het eindelijk zover, Vriendin Nummer B trad officieel toe tot de orde der kebabreporters. Mee op kebabjacht mocht, maar wel alleen in ruil voor een recensie, dus hierbij het verslag van een memorabel broodje.
Een waterig winterzonnetje weerkaatste in onze, helaas geopende, bierblikjes. Dat dat in Den Haag een absoluut boetewaardig misdrijf is, daar kwamen wij enkele minuten later achter.
Niet getreurd; vol goede moed besloten wij de hofstad nog een kans te geven. In navolging van enkele van onze collegae spotte Ben Brak een kebabzaak en wegens gebrek aan ontbijt én in ene poging mezelf direct te bewijzen was ik er als de kippen bij om tegen de uitbater van de zaak ‘Hetzelfde voor mij!’ te roepen.
Wat volgde was een knap staaltje seksisme. Míjn broodje werd ingepakt in aluminiumfolie, op een servetje op een schoon bord gelegd en vergezeld van een bemoedigende glimlach en twee flessen saus, knoflook en sambal. Mocht ik er zelf opdoen. Lief. Vervolgens werd Ben’s broodje ruw bekwakt met saus en in het gebruikelijke papiertje over de counter zijn kant op geschoven. Alstu.
Enigszins in de war over de meest toepasselijke reactie op dit alles (belediging? gevleid? plaatsvervangende belediging?) volgde ik Ben de zaak uit, waarna wij in het zonnetje het ons in de hand geschoven broodje goed bekeken. Het oordeel was droevig. Broodje kipkebab is sowieso al niet erg aantrekkelijk, en dit dode gevogelte zag eruit alsof het met veren en al door de versnipperaar was gerausd en daarna op een rol was geplakt. Een beetje huiverig namen we een hap en kwamen al vrij snel tot de conclusie dat het broodje smaakte zoals het eruitzag: kut. Kleffe stukjes kipachtige substantie, waterige, niet noemenswaardige knoflooksaus en verlepte strookjes ijsbergsla in een iets te lang getoast maisbroodje waren ons deel. Enige smaak kwam eigenlijk voornamelijk van de sambal die ik er wegens de zelfbedieningsoptie extra dik op had gespoten. Bijzonder aan de broodjes kipkebab van Grillroom Arena is wel de bijzondere consequentie qua indeling. Ben en ik kwamen er al snel achter dat bij beide broodjes de sla de linkerkant vulde en het vlees de rechterkant. Niet, zoals zo vaak, eerst een laag sla en daarbovenop vlees maar náást elkaar. Typisch. Dit droeg overigens niet bij aan enige smaaksensatie, maar het was leuk geprobeerd.
Door honger gedreven kreeg ik het hele broodje weg, maar Ben gooide halverwege de handdoek in de ring en de rest van zijn teleurstellende kipkebabje (is dat een pleonasme?) in de prullenbak. Hoofdschuddend en overleggend over wie de recensie mocht schrijven liepen we verder, op naar de volgende tent.
Na een korte stop bij de Istanbul was het tijd voor bier dat wel legaal gedronken mocht worden en dus volgden wij Tedje naar café Cremers. Eenmaal daar begon mijn buik angstvallig te rommelen en voelde ik me wat weeïg. De schuld gevend aan het overvloedige roken wat ik had gedaan negeerde ik de opkomende misselijkheid, tot ik op de terugweg van de wc Ben passeerde. Hij zat er wat bleekjes bij. “B, hoe voel je je?” vroeg hij me ernstig. Ik gaf toe dat ik me wel eens beter had gevoeld en hij knikte begrijpend. “Kuttent. Kut. tent.” Gebroederlijk besloten we de misselijkheid weg te drinken en een half uurtje later vertrokken we enigszins gesterkt met Tedje voorop richting de volgende, hopelijk goede, kebabber.
‘s Avonds zat ik moe maar voldaan in de trein terug en had ik me volgens Jan B. goed gehouden. Gloeiend van trots moest ik concluderen dat een dag op pad met Kebabreporters een naar broodje kipspul absoluut waard was.
