Na een week iets gedronken te hebben, dat door de heidenen koffie wordt genoemd, waren Ma CA en ik er wel weer rijp voor.
Groot was dan ook mijn geluk toen ik in één blikveld Starbucks en Jojo’s Kebab, Curry & Pizza pakte. Daar tussenin zat een openbaar toilet en stonden een paar hele zielige tafeltjes met idem stoelen.
Normaal zou ik doorgelopen zijn, de combinatie van Pizza en Kebab in één uitbaterij moet verboden worden. Eigenlijk ben ik stiekem voorstander van Europese regelgeving op dit punt. Niet dat dit hier helpt, want we lopen in Hongkong, op weg naar de pont naar Kowloon.
Hoe groot is de kans dat je de perfecte combinatie van koffie en kebab nog ergens tegen komt, als je maar een paar uur hebt en je de noodvoorraad adressen bent vergeten?
Ik schuifel naar Jojo’s. Kleine toko, met twee Indiase typen achter het venster. Verder is er niemand, maar, en dat geeft hoop, er draaien twee spitten. Beiden met gestapeld vlees. Het kebab menu is uitgebreid: kip, lam en vis. Even overweeg ik hardcore te gaan, maar uiteindelijk wint het gevoel voor avontuur. Ik neem de viskebab.
Of ik maar even plaats wil nemen aan een tafeltje. De kebabber werkt met zijn rug naar me toe, waardoor ik niet kan zien hoe het productie proces verloopt. Wel zie ik alles in aluminium even de magnetron of een oventje in gaan. Ik vrees met grote vrezen. De rol wordt in tweeën gesneden en geserveerd. Ma CA heeft inmiddels de koffie gescoord, dus het plaatje in compleet.
Het oordeel. Het is een wrap, met sla, sterke ui en tomaat. Daartussen bevind zich een Chinese vis. Het is geen zalm, maar het lijkt er op. De saus is een vrij waterige yoghurt variant, die aan alle kanten het broodje probeert te verlaten om zich, tamelijk succesvol, aan mij te vergrijpen.
De wrap is buitengewoon goed. Knapperig, zonder taai te worden. De groenten is heel vers en de verdeling ideaal. De klap op de vuurpijl is de kruiding. Ik kan het niet precies thuisbrengen, maar de echte kebabsmaak is er duidelijk en de combinatie met de vis is meer dan perfect. Verder mag je van mensen uit India verwachten dat er geen sprake is van “slappe sambal”. God wat is dit spul heet. Door de combinatie met de yoghurtsaus, het goede brood en de vis blijft het smakelijk. Sommige kebabbers zijn van mening dat als ze maar een binnenbrand in je bek veroorzaken dat ze het goed doen, maar ik hou er niet van.
Tegen de tijd dat de saus mijn nek in loopt wordt de functie van het openbaar toilet me duidelijk. Geheel opgefrist vertrekken we, nadat ook de dopio is verwerkt, met de pont naar Kowloon.
Nederland zou meer viskebab moeten hebben. Ik ga ondertussen mijn volgende rapport plannen. Ik denk nog steeds aan een reis naar Maaskantje.
