Ik was net aan het 6e couplet toe van “Een potje met vet” dat ik samen met Madonna zong op een of ander groot concert toen ik wreed uit mijn droom werd gewekt door het geluid van de wekker. Als ik een stripfiguur was geweest had ik op dat moment een wolkje met doodshoofden en wapentuig boven mijn hoofd hangen. Maar ik ben geen stripfiguur, verre van zelfs. Ik kafferde de wekker dus eens goed uit en vroeg me af waarom hij eigenlijk sowieso afging. Het was zaterdag verdomme! Na wat diep nadenken wist ik het weer. Ik zou een dagje richting Keulen gaan. Ja, dat rechtvaardigde het belachelijk vroege tijdstip wel. Koffie. Heb ik wel eens gezegd dat de uitvinder van koffie een standbeeld verdient?
Na wat koffie en een douche was ik er wel klaar voor. Ontbijten sloeg ik over, ik krijg ’s morgens vroeg niks door mijn keel, en we zouden nog genoeg gaan eten vandaag. Dat kwam wel goed. Op naar vriend X. Dit kon nog wel eens spannend worden. Deze jongen staat namelijk bekend om zijn veelvuldige bezoeken aan de kroeg en de hoeveelheden bier die hij daarbij drinkt. Zou hij wakker zijn? Aanspreekbaar? Of zou dit een kwestie worden van heel veel bellen en steentjes tegen zijn raam gooien? Ik vreesde het ergste. Nadat mijn vinger de bel los gelaten had bleef het ernstig stil. Dat voorspelt niet veel goeds. Gelukkig hoorde ik na enkele minuten toch wat gestommel en opende vriend X. half ontbloot de deur. Nog half dronken, na slechts 2 uur slaap. Maar hij was in het land der levenden, gelukkig. Nadat hij een plens water over zijn gezicht gegooid had was ook hij er klaar voor. Mooi. Op naar de rendez-vous plek waar onze chauffeur voor de dag ons zou ophalen.
Hoewel onze chauffeur niet bekend staat om zijn op tijd komen was hij deze keer stipt op tijd. Zo wees alles erop dat dit een mooie dag zou gaan worden. En dat werd het, de stemming zat er goed in en er werd heel wat afgelachen. Niet in de laatste plaats om X. die er half dronken heel wat grappen en grollen uit wist te gooien. Onze chauffeur wist ook enkele sterke oneliners te spuien zodat we bleven lachen. Eenmaal over de grens besloten we eerst maar eens wat te gaan shoppen. Verwacht van ons geen winkel in winkel uit gedrag, nee, we reden rechtstreeks naar een grote loods waar ze toffe merken voor weinig verkochten. Voor minder dan 50 euro wist ik mijn garderobe weer aardig aan te vullen. X. wist zelfs een paar airforce one’s (voor de leken, net als ik : Nike’s en blijkbaar gewilde) voor 9 euro op de kop te tikken. Helaas kwam ik er pas later achter dat we dezelfde maat hadden, want dat zijn natuurlijk prijzen om over naar huis te schrijven. Al is dat zinloos, want ik woon alleen en wat heb ik er nou aan als ik enkele dagen later een briefje krijg met informatie die ik toch al wist? Goed, dat gehad hebbende was het tijd voor het mooie oude centrum van Keulen.
Natuurlijk weer de Dom in geweest. Mooie ruimte, al blijft het een kerk. Ik stond nog even op het punt om onder luid “lang zal hij leven” gezang alle kaarsjes die mensen daar branden uit te blazen maar het leek me toch niet zo heel erg gepast. Gegeten bij die Subway, die in het geval van dit filiaal zeer blij mocht zijn dat dit niet Subwayreporters is, voor het eerst in mijn leven een slechte Subway ervaring terwijl ik toch echt zwaar fan ben. Ach, je kan niet alles hebben (En waar zou je het moeten laten? Zou Loesje zeggen). Een mooie openlucht expositie gevonden op de muren van een oude fabriek. De plaatselijke kunstenaars maar eens gevraagd naar een goed broodje kebab. Helaas snapte we er niet zo veel van en bleek de weg in de richting waar we heen gestuurd werden redelijk eenrichtings verkeer te zijn. We kwamen diverse tenten tegen, maar konden niet afslaan, of niet parkeren. Een bron van ergernis. Gelukkig zijn er meerdere tenten in Keulen en behalve meerdere wegen naar Rome zijn er ook meerdere wegen naar kebabtoko’s. We vonden er een op de hoek van die ene en die andere straat. Met verse broodjes die konden lopen. Ofzo. Zo goed is mijn Duits ook weer niet, maar het zag er goed uit, redelijk druk ook.
Eenmaal binnen viel het op dat er nergens op de menulijsten kebab te bekennen was. Wel twee rollen, een bestond uit mooi gestapeld vlees, de ander uit de “normale” geperste rol. Lijkt me vrij duidelijk voor welke ik koos. Dit bleek kip te zijn. Jammer, hoe mooi was het als dit de lams rol was. Goed broodje, inderdaad vers en erg lekker. Vlees werd afgesneden, niet elektrisch maar met de hand. Prachtig! Zo vaak zie je dit stukje ouderwets vakwerk niet meer. Tsaziki saus, sla, witte kool en brokken ui werden er in gedaan. geen sambal, geen knoflooksaus. Dit was het. Ik was niet heel erg te spreken over de Tsaziki maar ik ben daar ook niet heel erg in thuis. Mijn vrienden vonden het erg lekker en hebben er meer verstand van, dus ik neem aan dat het dan gewoon goed was. De kip smaakte goed, niet de cup-a-soup smaak, maar gewoon kip, zoals kip van de bbq smaakt. Puur. Dit redde het broodje nog een beetje, maar echt te spreken was ik er niet over.
In plaats van af te reken en weg te gaan besloot ik nog een broodje te nemen. Dit omdat ik nog honger had, benieuwd was naar de “meat” kebab en het feit dat de kans klein was dat ik mijn vrienden kon overhalen nog een andere tent te bezoeken. Beetje wanprestatie voor een reporter, maar het zij zo. Tsaziki saus maar even over geslagen. Gevraagd om sambal, maar dat was er niet. Ehh, ja, je leest het goed. Geen sambal. Wel hete saus die er erg lekker uitzag, maar ongeveer net zo pittig is als een interview in het jeugdjournaal. Door het ontbreken van de tsaziki viel pas op hoe zuur de witte kool was. Zuurkool dus. Vermoed ik, want ik blief geen zuurkool en weet dus niet precies meer hoe dat smaakt. Niet lekker dus. Het vlees van de geperste rol kon mij ook niet echt bekoren. Je kunt hier dus beter een broodje kipkebab nemen. Ik rekende voor de twee broodjes en een halve liter goed koud bier 7,50 af. Dat was nog best schappelijk vond ik.
Eenmaal teug bij de openlucht expositie zagen we de jongen die ons de weg had gewezen met een broodje kebab dat er erg goed uit zag. Jammer, maar helaas. Maar dit was vast niet de laatste keer dat ik in Keulen ben geweest, dus wie weet vind ik de volgende keer wel een betere tent. En ik heb een topdag gehad, dat is ook wat waard. Waarvoor nog dank naar onze chauffeur en X.
