Op de een of andere manier weet ik mezelf op grijze, troosteloze dagen als vandaag altijd terug te vinden op plekken die nog net even wat erger zijn dan het weer. Plekken die er niet alleen erg slecht uit zien door het weer, maar het ook daadwerkelijk zijn. Een zonnetje en een buslading mooie schaars geklede vrouwen zouden er namelijk ook geen verbetering in kunnen brengen. Waarschijnlijk zelfs niet een klein beetje. Waar ik me vandaag bevond? Het Buikslotermeerplein, in Amsterdam noord. En dan niet aan de kant waar de meeste winkels zitten, maar daar onder de Waddenweg. Een parkeerplaats onder het viaduct, vol geplakt, vol gespoten, een beetje sinister. Daar waar de grote winkelketens hun helft van het gebeuren nog wel redelijk fris houden is het stuk dat grenst aan de markt vervallen, oud en vies. Volgens mij heeft hier ooit nog een afterclub gezeten, uiteraard gesloten na een drugs inval. Naar ik meen. Passend dus.
Hoewel het me niets zou verbazen als je hier ook nog heroine zou kunnen kopen was ik er daar uiteraard niet voor. Ik was er voor een mooie verslaving, kebab. En die verslaving had mij naar deze uithoek van dit plein gebracht. Hoewel een zaak die zich “The king” noemt natuurlijk om een bezoek schreeuwt liep ik toch bij zijn overbuurman binnen. Want : Turks en Grieks. Als dat geen feta zou gaan worden!
Niet dus. Dit broodje was net zo triest als de plek waar het geserveerd werd, en misschien nog triester dan het weer. Een bolletje dat voor de vorm even de oven in ging, die waarschijnlijk gewoon uit stond. De hele bedoeling van een broodje in de oven is dat het geheel wat knapperiger er uit komt dan het er in ging. Dit broodje was naar mijn mening nog steeds te zacht. Bakjes vlees, eiervlees, van het ergste soort. Niet gekruid, melig, en totaal niet bijzonder. Dat ging er in. Daarna saus, die werkelijk niets aan smaak heeft toegevoegd. Geen knoflook smaak, niets pittigs, niets. Daarna wat sla, een plakje komkommer en een waterig stukje tomaat. Geen feta, wat volgens mij toch echt een duidelijk Grieks product is. Geen ui, geen kool, niets dat het broodje iets extra’s zou kunnen geven. Dit alles werd samengesteld door een in plastic handschoen (dat dan weer wel) verpakte hand met dezelfde liefde die Geert Wilders voor Polen of de islam heeft. De verdeling was zoals ik het al beschreef; vlees, saus, groenten. Slecht dus. De lekkere smaak afwezig, de nare oprispingen nog lang aanwezig. En dit alles voor de prijs van 3 euro. Ach, het past bij de omgeving, laten we het daar maar op houden.
