De laatste twee jaar heb ik serieuze TOPPERS gegeten en daar niks over geschreven!
Het zijn geen döners maar fuck you. Ik doe ze alsnog want anders is al dat gedoe voor niks.
Ja, voor mijn plezier ja, maar ik deel dat graag met de rest van de wereld, want zo ben ik.
Mocht je het lumineuze idee hebben om eens naar de hoofdstad van Griekenland te gaan, dan heb ik hier een goede tip voor je!
Middenin dat toeristengedoe zit een vleesmarkt. Je weet wel, zo’n ding met druk schreeuwende mannen, druipende karkassen en de geur van ijzer en bloed in de lucht.
Elke toerist komt daar langs want het is zo fotogeniek allemaal en zo authentiek.
Aan de buitenkant van die markt, aan de straat EVRIPIDOU, zit een tentje dat heet VOLVI.
Dit is mijn favoriete tent in Athene om te eten.
Ja, ik kan er niet omheen. Sinds ik hier ben geweest staat hij op 1.
Geen patat, geen tzatziki.
Rode ui, tomaat, mosterdsaus, paprikasaus en chiliflakes
MAAR….
Het beste ding is het vlees.
Het gaat hier niet over kebab, kalamaki of gyros, maar over SOUTZOUKAKIA.
Man man man, wat is dit een FEEST voor je mond!
De combinatie tussen de rode ui, de opvallende mosterd en het perfecte vlees is magisch.
Volvi verkoopt deze pitas met twee of met vier soutzoukakia erin, dus je kan soort van customizen als je veel of wat minder trek hebt.
THIS IS IT! THIS IS IIIIIIIIT!
Je doet jezelf echt tekort als je niet hierlangs gaat als je in Athene bent.
Koude flessen retsina, koude blikjes Mythos en een gierende grill.
Voor de balie staan twee of drie tonnen als tafels met een paar krukken; Volvi is vooral van het afhalen en het bezorgen. Foodtours hebben deze spot ook al ontdekt en opgenomen in hun repertoire wegens de unieke, nergens anders te krijgen smaak van de meesterlijke soutzoukakia.
Even een verhaaltje!
Dus we vlogen terug van een eiland naar Athene. In de morgen lagen we nog op het strand, om drie uur vertrokken we richting vaste land en verder op de avond, om negen uur, zouden we weer doorvligen naar Nederland.
Normaliter spendeer je je tijd dan op het vliegveld met duur vreten en achterlijk wachten.
Ik bedacht om gewoon naar de stad te gaan om daar nog een Volvi te scoren.
De metro doet er pakweg 50 minuten over; het zou allemaal erg smooth moeten lopen om weer op tijd terug te kunnen zijn. Fuck it.
Dus wij erheen, bij Monastiraki eruit, meteen vol gas naar die tent.
Twee pitas in m’n mik geschoven….en meteen nog twee besteld.
Met een fles wijn en m’n laatste broodje in de hand terug naar de metro gerend en precies op tijd terug op het vliegveld om te boarden!!
Zo lekker is die shit.
Volvi. Mijn nummer één spot in Athene voor pitas met vlees.
En dat zegt wat.
Ik heb Thanassis, Adriano, O Elvis, O Kostas, To Prodorpion, Meat ’n Roses, Kosta, Hoocut, lefteris O politis, Achilleos, Kapsa, Posto en meer gedaan daar, maar dit is de nummer 1.
Er is een goeie runner-up, maar de top deal, de beste, de knaller, de must eat, de mount everest, het summum…..dat is VOLVI.
