Op een tamelijk onaangename tijd moest ik van Den Haag naar Brussel. Je kent dat wel. Eet ik nu wel vast, of wacht ik tot straks….
Ruim een half uur over voor vertrek van de trein, maar dus duidelijk rond haptijd: ik eet nu!
Geen nood, een recente kebabtour had aangetoond dat het in den Haag goed toeven is, tenzij… enfin lees er maar wat oudere verslagen op na.
Ze zeggen wel eens dat toeval niet bestaat. Mijn ervaring bij station Hollandse Spoor lijkt dit te bevestigen. Prachtige kebabzaak. Gesloten. Heeft de gemeente den Haag een ontmoedigingsbeleid ingesteld na de laatste kebabtour? Zijn alle kebabzaken in een straal van dertig kilometer rond de Haagse stations ontruimd?
Hongerig verdwijn ik in de trein. Na twee uur kwom ik er loeiend van de honger uit. Een grijp in mijn noodvoorraad kebabadressen en jawel, op naar de Sultans of Kebab.
Je zou de Sultans kunnen omschrijven als hardcore kebabbers. Fel neon licht, twee draaiende spitten met prachtige kip en lam. Rode gevel en uitgebreid menu. De kebabbers zelf in bedrijfskleding met fel rode petjes.
In de zaak zijn een beperkt aantal barkrukken in de vloer gegoten. Een granieten bar en stenen vloer staan er borg voor dat je alleen jezelf kan beschadigen in het onderkomen van deze Sultans.
De kebabber vraagt me iets. Ik versta hem niet. Dit is dan ook in het Franstalige deel van de stad. En ik heb mijn oortjes in. De kebabbers herhaalt de vraag. Het is nog steeds Frans, maar nu kan ik het nu in ieder geval horen. Eén blik op de muur en…
De Goden zijn Geprezen, doe mij maar een kebab döner met feta. Ja reporters, jullie lezen het goed, Bob scoorde nu eens geen frites, maar FETA!
Met de rest van het verhaal ben ik snel klaar: ¼ Turks brood, goed knapperige onder de plaat. Prima knoflooksaus en op mijn verzoek een klein beetje sambalsaus. En verse groenten bestaande uit witte en rode kool, tomaat, ui en sla. Alles afgedekt met een ruime laag feta. Het vlees ging direct van de rol op het brood. De bezoekers stroomden voldoende snel door om fratsen als bain Marie (ook niet Vlaams) achterwege te kunnen laten.
Samenvattend: dit was er weer zo een. Een kebab waarvoor we dit allemaal doen. En je kunt er ook op wereld dierendag heen, of, als je uit de kast gekomen bent met een vriend m/v die vegetariër is. Op het menu staat ook falafel.
Voor €4,50 praten we nergens meer over, voor een beetje meer krijg je nog veel meer. Het enige negatieve dat ik kan melden zijn de foto’s. Moest met de telefoon.
