Een clubgenoot van me omschrijft deze laatste dagen van het jaar als de periode van negatief afvallen.

Ma CA en ik hebben ons daarom tussen kerst en oud-en-nieuw teruggetrokken in de Ardennen. Het op- en aflopen van heuvels moet de overmaat aan kerstdiner compenseren en de voorbereiding voor de oliebollen treffen. Nu is ons onderkomen in een omgeving die wordt gekenmerkt door rust.
Dat betekent dat je geen verkeer hoort, er geen spoorwegen zijn en de natuur loopt er vrij rond. Ma CA vindt dat prachtig, vooral als er een betrouwbaar hek tussen ons en die natuur is.
Nu speelt dat hier in deze bossen niet, er zijn alleen jagers om de natuur in toom te houden. Mogelijk daardoor heeft de natuur haast. Als je drie keer zo’n hert voorbij heb zien scheuren dan wordt het sjokken tegen zo’n Arden op toch wel een opgave. En je krijgt trek. Dus genoeg negatief afvallen, in de auto en op strooptocht.
In Echternach zagen we direct al drie zaken. Je vraagt je wel eens af of Luxemburg een bestemming zou kunnen zijn voor een kebabweekend. Eerst met zijn allen naar la Grande Bouffe kijken en daarna een land leeg grazen.
In Echternach staat de mooiste kebabposter die ik tot nu toe heb gezien. Pure pedofilie. Maar we hadden trek in dood vlees, dus we eindigden in Kebap Haus.
Nee, dat is geen typefout. Luxemburgs is een eigen taal, wat tot gevolg heeft dat ze helemaal niets spreken. De kebabber van dienst (lokaal aangeduid als Türkeiundgemüseineinemsandwichmitknoblauchsaucebootfrommassistent) vraagt in een zin met Duitse, Franse, Turkse en Engelse woorden wat ik wil en maakt dan razend snel een klein broodje. Met wat volgens hem “Turkey” is. Ik hoop dat het echt een dode vogel is, en dat ik niet de resten van een broedermoord op mijn broodje krijg. Wat het ook is, het is keurig gestapeld op twee glorieuze rollen.
Goed, naar het resultaat: Prima broodje met grote schijf feta, prima kalkoen, zeer verse groenten (ui, sla, kool). Afgemaakt met een prima knoflook saus en de scherpe Turkse kruiden ter vervanging van de sambalsaus voor €3,90. Dat was een kleintje, maar groot genoeg om de helft van de grote Nederlandse broodjes een minderwaardigheidscomplex te bezorgen.
