Er zijn trends in winkelstraten. Zo kun je nergens meer binnenlopen zonder loombandjes te zien of te struikelen over de glutenvrije voedselwaren. Zoals ik in een loomband-geïnfecteerde winkel al zei: “In mijn tijd hadden we gewoon nog Flippo’s.” Wat in mijn tijd nog een videotheek was, is tegenwoordig een kebabzaak.
Toegegeven, ‘in mijn tijd’ was het al lastig voor de videotheekeigenaar om zijn hoofd boven water te houden. Ik heb drie en een half jaar in de videotheek in Tiel gewerkt. Ik heb er nog steeds zo’n jaren ’80 romkom-achtig gevoel bij. Nieuwe klanten in het systeem invoeren, films aanraden, inleverbox legen en sorteren, boetes innen, maar voornamelijk keer op keer uitleggen dat de nieuwe Nicholas Cage dagfilm uitgehuurd was (wat een woord). Echt. Fuck Nicholas Cage.
We hadden een kelder in de videotheek, met twee ruimtes. In de eerste ruimte stonden de genres thriller en horror. Als je naar rechts afsloeg kwam je bij de porno. De grenzen tussen deze genres waren vaag. Zo was de Duitse ‘Oma’s Ficken’ reeks bijvoorbeeld erg populair. In de pornoruimte hing ook een camera. Ik heb menig wat nare dingen gezien terwijl ik naar die beelden keek, om nog niet te spreken over de hoesjes van de pornodvd’s zelf. Ik werd vrolijk van de hoezen van Hollywood parodieën, zoals ‘Fill Jill’ of ‘The DomiMatrix’, maar ik heb ook hoesjes beetgehouden met fetishes die nooit het daglicht zouden mogen zien. Die fisting hoes (met in plaats van een vuist het hoofd van een dwerg) zal me niet snel verlaten. (Sorry voor de beelddenkers. Of alsjeblieft, als dat je ding is).
Er kwam ooit een man binnen met zijn kleine dochtertje. Voor hij haar kon tegen houden holde het dochtertje in kwestie naar beneden. Ze kwam ze weer naar boven en riep wat verward: ‘Papa, er stopte iemand wat in een mevrouw haar kont!’. Beschaamd kwam hij zijn DVD’s afrekenen. Ik kon mijn gegrinnik niet voor me houden, waarop hij zei: “Tja, ze is zes, op enig moment moet ze het toch leren.” Dit soort nare verhalen en anderen zorgen nog steeds voor een warm, nostalgisch gevoel van binnen. Die zaak was van mij. Ik werd vertrouwd met de financiën. Er waren mensen die wisten dat ze konden vertrouwen op mijn filmtips (en ook verontwaardigd waren als een tip van mij bleek tegen te vallen). Ik wist dat Meneer van Halperen dagelijks drie dagfilms kwam halen, geen pasje bij zich zou hebben en graag een tasje wilde.
Vorig jaar ging ik naar Tiel voor Appelpop, en toen zag ik tot mijn grote schrik dat de videotheek gesloten was. Natuurlijk zat het er al tijden aan te komen, maar ik had zo gehoopt dat mijn oude baas het zou weten te voorkomen. Helaas mocht het niet baten. Toen ik zag dat de zaak gesloten was schoot mijn hart in mijn keel. Het einde van een instituut, in mijn optiek.
Fast forward naar afgelopen weekend; wederom Appelpop. Weer loop ik langs wat vroeger de videotheek was. Wat ziet mijn oog? Nee. Het kan niet. God oh god, het cirkeltje is weer rond hoor. In wat ooit mijn geliefde videotheek was, zit nu een kebabzaak.
De DT Twins is geen ‘gewone’ kebabzaak. Het is gestyled als een chique restaurant, waar je ook kebab kan halen om mee te nemen. Ze hebben een deal; een broodje kebab met een drankje voor €4. De schone omgeving, de saladebar en rollen vlees geven me hoop. Dit zou nog best wel eens heel erg lekker kunnen worden. Ook is het personeel heel erg vriendelijk, hoewel ze duidelijk nog in hun ritme moeten komen. Ik vraag om een broodje met alles. Het woord ‘alles’ blijkt toch voor teveel kebabbers ingewikkeld. Het uiteindelijke product is een simpel broodje met enkel ijsbergsla, vlees en knoflooksaus. Het vlees is vers en mals, maar een standaard eierproduct. De ijsbergsla is ook vers. De knoflooksaus is zelfgemaakt. Er is geen sambal. Noch is er gebruik gemaakt van de tomaten, komkommers, kool, wortel of andere zaken die zich in de saladebar bevonden. De verdeling is vreselijk; een kwak saus bovenop, vlees als tweede en sla onderin.
Jan Beton is ernstig teleurgesteld. Ik vind het feit dat alles vers is nog voor ze spreken, maar er is duidelijk veel ruimte voor verbetering. Ik vraag, met enige terughoudendheid, wat ze met de kelder gedaan hebben. “Dat is opslagruimte geworden.” “Hebben jullie er wel goed schoongemaakt?” vraag ik. “Ach ja, het is allemaal verbouwd.” Ik hoef me dus in ieder geval geen zorgen te maken over de origine van de knoflooksaus.
