Op youtube trof ik bovenstaand nummer aan over een kebabzaak in Arnhem (inmiddels verwijderd). Na een minuutje wordt het wat verstaanbaar en gaat het over allerlei lekkernijen die chico je in zijn toko zou voorschotelen. Bij het ontdekken van dit nummer moest ik meteen aan “Manger du kebab” van Lil Maaz denken. Dit franse nummer van een kebabber is zelfs op singel uitgekomen. Voor bovenstaande artiesten is een dergelijke carrière denk ik niet weggelegd want jezus wat een slecht nummer. Toch had het mijn interesse gewekt en besloot ik als echte romanticus mevrouw Bert mee uit eten te nemen om te kijken of Chico’s kebab echt zo goed is.
Chico heeft zich gevestigd in het centrum van Arnhem tegenover de V&D. Een grote toko bestaande uit 2 verdiepingen. Hij heeft de zaak zeer toepasselijk naar zichzelf genoemd. Chico’s Place. Om het af te maken staat zijn gezicht ook nog eens op de ruit en in de toko op de muur geschilderd. Binnen is het druk. Ik sluit achteraan in de rij aan. Voor mij staat een groep gasten die los van te bestellen allemaal moeilijke handrukken en boksen uitwisselen met het personeel. Eenmaal aan de beurt staat Chico mij zeer vriendelijk te woord. Ik bestel 2 broodjes en 2 cola. (3,50 voor een broodje en 1,50 voor een cola) De cola krijg ik meteen. De broodjes worden zo gebracht zegt hij. Mevrouw Bert en ik nemen plaats aan een tafeltje. Ondertussen is het een komen en gaan van mensen in de zaak. Chico’s is duidelijk een fenomeen in Arnhem want deze toko loopt echt goed. Bijkomend voordeel is dat je dus sowieso lekker vers vlees krijgt. Even later komt inderdaad een jonge met “Je weet zelluf… Chico’s kebab!” op zijn shirt 2 hele mooie broodjes brengen. Drinken hadden jullie al toch? roept Chico. Ik knik bevestigend. Sausjes staan op de tafel klinkt het vervolgens. Er kan gegeten worden en ik moet meteen toegeven. Deze man verdiende inderdaad een lovende rap. Heerlijk broodje kebab! Vers goed geroosterd brood. Uitstekend groenvoer bestaande uit sla, komkommer, tomaat, ui, rode kool, augurk, pepertjes en feta. Zeer uitgebreid dus en alles op en top vers. Dan het belangrijkste… het vlees. Vers van de rol en heerlijk. Op de tafel staan 3 lekkere sausjes om het geheel af te maken. Knoflook, cocktail en sambal. De sambal is trouwens lekker pittig. Of het komt doordat Arnhem dicht bij Duitsland ligt weet ik niet maar de eerste 3 zaken die ik hier heb bezocht doen mij vermoeden dat de lat hier hoger wordt gelegd dan in de rest van Nederland. In ieder geval een dikke Big-Up voor Chico zijn uitstekende broodjes.. Boks!!!

Tot mijn grote vreugde blijkt er sinds kort ook een Chico’s Place in de Waalstad te vinden te zijn.
Nog geen recensie hier zie ik, maar aan een kebabreporter de schone taak ook deze toko eens te voorzien van een smaakvol bezoekje.
Ben er dit weekend geweest en in een schone zaak met ruime keuze een heerlijke durum döner weten te scoren (nee, geen broodje besteld).
€ 4.50 armer, een rijkelijk gevulde rol die amper dicht gerold kon worden rijker. Smakelijk gekruid vleesch en ruime keuze aan salade / vulling.
Voor mij een aanrader er nog eens heen te gaan.
