Ik ben een beetje een vreemde eend in de bijt. Als je mij ziet zal je niet onmiddellijk zeggen: daar loopt een whiskyliefhebber. Ik ben wel eens naar whiskyfestivals geweest. Daar lopen dan hordes middelbare mannen in fleecetruien die lekker een dagje voor zichzelf houden, af en toe vergezeld van hun vrouwen in bijpassende fleecetruien en meestal voorzien van een te zware compensatiecamera. Als een wat jongere meid die er (hopelijk niet) uit ziet alsof ze eerder Jillz zou drinken, krijgen mensen vaak het verkeerde idee.
Nou stond er recentelijk op Groupon een deal voor een workshop ‘maak je eigen whisky’. De omschrijving: ‘Geef een man een vis en hij heeft eten voor één dag, leer een man whisky maken en hij realiseert zich vroeg of laat dat dinosaurussen een bedenksel zijn van de overheid om tijdreizigers te ontmoedigen.’ Verkocht.
Samen met Jan Beton, Vriendin nummer B en nog drie vriendinnen trokken we richting Brouwerij ‘t Koelschip. In… Almere. Vier van de zes deelnemers voorzien van een stevige kater.
We stapten de bushalte uit en liepen richting het aangegeven adres. Eén vriendin merkt nog op: straks zitten we in iemand zijn huiskamer. En jawel. We stapten een gang binnen die verbouwd was tot een workshopruimte. De ‘master distiller’ van ‘t Koelschip was een wat oudere dikke man die bij binnenkomst meteen zijn klanten op hun plek zette. Eén man (buiten ons gezelschap) had zijn peuk niet in de bosjes mogen gooien, en Vriendin Nummer B diende haar zonnebril af te zetten. Ondertussen holde er een klein keffertje tussen onze benen door. Er werd aan Jan Beton gevraagd of hij zijn dames mee had gesleept. Collectief werd er naar mij gewezen: ik was de boosdoener.
Wat volgde was een twee uur durend college over de geschiedenis van- en het maken van- goede whisky. Halverwege werd er whisky op tafel gezet, maar die mochten we niet opdrinken. Aangezien ik katerloos was, was dat voor mij uiterst vermakelijk, maar de rest werd wat groen van de alcoholdampen. Na het college mochten we eindelijk aan de slag: whisky’s mengen tot we onze eigen blend gevonden hadden. Aan het einde van de workshop was er de mogelijkheid om onze eigen fles whisky mee te nemen, die we over drie jaar en een dag mogen open maken.
Toen de workshop afgelopen was, kwam er onder de inmiddels baldadige cursisten een plan naar voren om nog even het centrum van Almere in te gaan. Want dat is zo aanlokkelijk. De combinatie van kater, whisky drinken en het middaguur zorgde voor stevig trillende handen van voornamelijk Jan Beton. Natuurlijk gingen we dus op zoek naar een kebabzaak. En die vonden we: Alexandrie op de Grote Markt.
Een nette grote zaak. Ze verkochten kalfs- en kipskebab, maar de kalfskebab was op. Zoals een ware neger niet helemaal betaamt haakte Vriendin Nummer B op dat moment af: zij doet niet aan kip. Jan Beton en ik gingen er wel voor. Goed gekruid vlees, redelijk standaard groenvoer met één kwart tomaat verstopt ergens in het broodje. Laffe knoflooksaus, pittige sambal. Het brood, daarentegen, dat was raar. Karton. Het smaakte oprecht naar karton. Wellicht een oude herinnering, terug te traceren naar mijn kinderlijke dagen in handenarbeid, ik weet het niet, maar daar deed het me aan denken. Voor vier euro stilden we onze honger, Jan zijn trillende handen, maar niet onze drang naar een smakelijke maaltijd.
Over 1088 dagen mag mijn whiskyfles open. Gelukkig hoef ik daar niet voor naar Almere.
