Het is maandag. Ik haat maandag.
Toegegeven, vandaag wordt ik ingewerkt voor wat, na mijn stage, mijn nieuwe baan als assistent grafisch ontwerper en DTP-er moet gaan worden. Dat vind ik erg gaaf, maar het veranderd verder niets aan het feit dat het maandag is. Tegen de lunch vertrek ik dan ook met gepaste agorafobie als de wiedeweerga het kantoor op zoek naar een kebab tent. Nou ja, op zoek…
Ik besluit de Automatiek…. Ruys? eens te bezoeken, de eerste kebab tent in Hoog Catharijne in de gang richting de Jaarbeurs (oftewel Jaarbeurstraverse 1 te Utrecht).
Ik bekijk de zaak, en wordt minder enthousiast dan de vorige keer dat ik er langs liep. De zaak blijkt “Automatiek Kruys” te eten, maar de “K” is van het naambord gevallen, evenals de tweede “A” in Automatiek. Ik vind het er verdomd haveloos uit zien.
Achter de flinke balie zijn vier mensen te vinden; een wat ouder stel, waarvan ik vermoed dat ze de eigenaren zijn, een langharige knul die duidelijk van Planet Hardrock komt, en een Turkse jongen met hip boeren petje. Rara, wie staat er aan het kebab-end van de balie? Ik vraag me af of ik dit stereotyperend of gewoon eerlijk vind, besluit dat het me eigenlijk niets uit maakt, en bestel een broodje kebab.
De jongen kijkt me chagrijnig aan, mompelt “drievijftug” (op zich geen verkeerd bedrag), pakt mijn geld aan, laat dat twee keer vallen, duwt het enigszins agressief in de kassa, pakt mijn wisselgeld, wil het me aangeven en laat ook dat per ongeluk weer vallen, kijkt er naar, en draait zich om terwijl hij me zelf naar mijn geld laat graaien.
Nadat hij zich omdraait pakt hij een bolletje van een stapel die me erg doen denken aan de witte bolletjes die je per zes bij de AH in een plastic zakje kan kopen. Hij gooit het bolletje een seconde of 5 onder de grill. Net lang genoeg om streepjes in het bolletje te deuken, maar niet lang genoeg om ook maar enig ander effect te hebben.
Vervolgens vraagt hij me: “alles?”, waarbij het niet helemaal duidelijk is wat hij bedoeld. Ik gok op groenvoer, en blijk gelijk te hebben. Ik krijg sla, tomaat en komkommer. Daarna krijg ik de kans om te zeggen wat voor saus ik wil en er wordt wat knoflooksaus bij gespoten. Sambal was ook een optie geweest.
Vervolgens verwacht ik dat hij richting de vlees(d)rol zal lopen, maar nee! Hij blijkt naast de bakken sla ook twee bakken au bain marie te hebben staan, waar mijn vlees uit geschept wordt. “Meenemen of nu opeten?” vraagt hij, met (voor mijn gevoel) een duidelijke voorkeur voor optie a.
Ik voel me wat opstandig worden en roep: “hier opeten alsjeblieft.”, waarop hij een plastic vorkje in mijn broodje duwt en het me aangeeft.
Ik verplaats me naar een van de sta-tafels en begin aan mijn broodje. Het is saai. De verdeling is… ok, over het algemeen heb ik zowel groenvoer als vlees, hoewel de saus veel beter verdeeld had kunnen zijn. De saus is overigens ook standaard knoflooksaus. Het broodje is precies wat ik verwachtte; een zacht bolletje dat zich niets heeft aangetrokken van de grill. Het vlees is grotendeels warm, hoewel het rap op het lauwe afstevent. Standaard gekruid, en het is duidelijk niet erg vers.
Het broodje is wel van een redelijk formaat, en zal mijn honger wel stillen.
Aangezien ik immense honger heb probeer ik mijn broodje snel weg te werken, maar blijkbaar niet snel genoeg. Halverwege mijn broodje komt er een kerel naast me staan. Hij stinkt een uur in de wind naar oud bier en sigaretten, heeft een blikje Heineken in zijn hand, en draagt een t-shirt met de tekst: “Mijn vriendin zegt dat ik nooit luister… of zoiets.” Flirtend zegt hij “Hey.” tegen me. Ik trek een wenkbrauw op, en zeg “Hey” op een toon waarop het duidelijk moet zijn dat ik niets met hem te maken wil hebben.
Ik ben geneigd om te vragen of hij écht een vriendin heeft, en hoewel ik vermoed dat ik de juiste toon te pakken kan krijgen (ook wel bekend als de: “Ja inderdaad, deze opmerking is niet aardig. Daar heb ik vrede mee.” toon), besluit ik toch mijn mond te houden aangezien hij me, naast zijn bestaan, niet echt iets misdaan heeft.
Hoewel hij verder niets meer tegen me zegt blijft hij wel naast me staan, en door zijn stank heb ik moeite de rest van mijn broodje weg te werken. Ik los dit op door mijn laatste happen al lopend richting de servetjes op te eten, veeg mijn mond af en vertrek.
