Gistermiddag weer eens een echte, om in de woorden van mijn tipgever te spreken, TOPPER ontdekt in Amsterdam. Ook nog voor een prijs waarmee je de economische crisis prima kunt overleven. En dat alles op loopafstand van het centrum!
Nadat ik mijn halve maandsalaris had uitgegeven aan nieuwe vispullen in Oost, werd het tijd voor wat voedsel. Met geld smijten maakt immers hongerig.
Ineens schoot me een tip te binnen van een bevriend kebabliefhebber die het had over een goed broodje voor twee euro in de Van Woustraat. Nou ben ik jaren terug al eens vanuit Nieuw West naar de Pijp gefietst voor een 2 euro broodje. Die was echter zo klein dat je er alsnog twee van moest eten om vol te raken. Maar dit was volgens hem een andere tent.
Tien minuten later stapte ik uit de tram op het Rembrandtplein en slenterde door de Utrechtsestraat, liep over het Frederiksplein dat er wat somber bij lag. Daarna langs het gebouw van De Nederlandse Bank, waar je dan zelf weer somber van wordt zo lelijk als dat gebouw is. Tot ik de Van Woustraat bereikte en moest gaan opletten voor een kebabtoko.
Ik had geen idee op welke hoogte de tent zat dus ik liep maar door, keek goed om me heen. Liep langs de Albert Cuyp, stak de Centuurbaan over en passeerde meerdere eettenten. Zouden ze wel hebben aangegeven dat er twee euro broodjes worden verkocht, of moet ik straks alle tentjes binnenstappen en vragen naar de prijs?
Op het moment dat ik de moed eigenlijk begon op te geven, spotte ik aan de overkant een kebabzaak die met felle neonlichten voor de ramen. Zou dit hem zijn? Toen ik wilde oversteken ontdekte ik precies tegenover deze tent nog een bakkertje waar ze kebab verkochten. Daar heen gelopen, stiekem naar binnen gegluurd maar zag nergens een prijs staan. Net toen ik wilde oversteken zag ik in mijn ooghoog het magische getal staan, nota bene op de bekende kebabvlag die elke kebabeteria heeft. €2.
Inmiddels viel ik bijna om van de honger dus ik bestelde snel een broodje en geroutineerd werd er een doner voor me bereid terwijl ik wat rond keek. Vier rollen hingen er maar liefst, twee kip en twee lam. Deze tent liep goed, dat kon niet anders.
Binnen een minuutje had ik een broodje in me handen en nam ik plaats op een krukje. Zag er niet onaardig uit. Goed gevuld, behoorlijk wat saus, beetje sla ertussen. Maar wat bij de eerste happen vooral opviel wat het heerlijke brood. Warm, vers, zelfgemaakt, goede dikte. Verder was alles in orde, ietwat zure saus maar daar zeiken we niet over. Op de lange tafel staan meerdere flacons met hete- en knoflooksaus zodat je tijdens de hele maaltijd gegarandeerd saus op je vlees hebt.
Tijdens het eten tuurde ik regelmatig naar de overburen. Ik weet niet wat zij vragen voor een broodje maar het lijkt erop dat zij vooral klanten willen trekken met de vele roze oranje neonlichten voor de ramen. Iets wat in die tien minuten dat ik keek overigens niet echt leek te lukken. Maar wat wil je, met zo’n gezellig bakkertje tegenover je waar een vriendelijke Turkse familie voor slechts twee euro een prima broodje voor je bereidt….
Duidelijk een TOPPERTJE dit. Mocht je ooit in de buurt zijn, stap binnen bij Leeman Doner. Een betere besteding van je twee euro bestaat er niet!
