Bijdrage van die gast met die vette shirts
Van de week werd ik door het kijken van de film Due Date even in mijn gezicht geslagen met het feit dat ik zelf ook ergens mee aan de late kant was. Dit verslag had namelijk al maanden geleden geschreven moeten zijn. Beter laat dan nooit vind ik. Of dat zo is laat ik aan jullie over. Afgelopen zomervakantie was ik in Berlijn vanwege een reisje door het thuisfront van die mensen waar je op die nieuwe, goed doordachte site van de PVV melding van overlast over kan doen, Oost-Europa. En wat doe je als je net bent aangekomen in Berlijn? Als je net als ik te veel met Delicatesther om gaat denk je dan aan kebab. Een paar sms’jes verder over het feit dat ik lekker wel kebab ga eten in Berlijn en dat ik daar dan maar een verslag over moest schrijven begin ik aan mijn missie om in iedere stad waar we komen een goede maaltijd van dood dier met Turkse kruiden te eten. Want ik zal maar eerlijk zijn, verstand van kebab heb ik niet dus ik zal jullie trachten te vermaken met extra stoere kebabfoto’s en hilarisch verhalen over Oostblokhoeren.
Oostblokhoeren zei je..? Oh sorry, ik was even afgeleid. Ik was dus net in Berlijn en ik had honger. Of beter gezegd, we hadden honger. Ik ben natuurlijk niet alleen op reis. Iemand moet foto’s maken van hoe ik stoer sta te kijken bij één of ander historisch gebouw. Ik heb niet veel geduld als ik honger heb, en mijn vrienden al helemaal niet. Na een tijdje zoeken naar een geschikte toko besloten we dan toch maar gewoon te eten bij een tent waar je van te voren al wist dat het niks ging worden. Een goede tent voor een verslag zal morgen wel komen. Ik zal nog maar eens eerlijk zijn, ik ben niet zo slim als ik denk. Ik heb namelijk van geen enkele zaak tijdens deze trip het adres opgeschreven. Maar Google Maps en een goed geheugen komen een heel eind. Als ik het goed heb zat dit tentje dus aan de Unter den Linden. Een grote, dure straat met in het midden een lang plein waar allemaal kleine vreetzaakjes zitten. De zeer kleine toko met terras werd gerund door drie Turkse mannen die overduidelijk familie waren. We legde €3.50 neer voor een broodje en nog een andere hoeveelheid muntjes voor bier. Ik zou het resultaat bijna teleurstellend noemen, behalve dat ik net al had gemeld dat we van te voren wisten dat dit niks ging worden. Een klein broodje met een bedroevende hoeveelheid vlees, groenvoer waar een konijn nog ongelukkig van zou worden en een laffe saus. Gelukkig smaakte het bier gewoon als bier. Dat andere broodje in Berlijn? Is er niet van gekomen, waarschijnlijk was ik te dronken, iets wat indrukwekkend vaak is voorgekomen die vakantie. Ondanks het gebrek aan goede kebab ben ik zeer content met Berlijn. Er was namelijk zo’n restaurant naast ons hostel met ‘all cocktails forever €3.50,-‘.
Praag daarentegen is een grafstad waar ik weinig goede woorden aan vuil wil maken. Maar het gene wat ik in Praag heb mee gemaakt is des te meer hilarisch. Vandaar dat deze alinea toch nog een flink aantal woorden telt. Het verhaal heeft verder weinig met kebab te maken, behalve dat het verklaard waarom ik deze met een kater aan het eten was. Vanaf het moment dat we in Praag aankwamen probeerde de oude chagrijnige mensen die de stad nog niet verlaten hadden ons op te lichten. Na iedere poging professioneel te hebben overwonnen hadden we eindelijk een leuk hostelletje voor een prima prijs in het centrum gevonden. Bij het restaurant waar we onze magen aan het vullen waren met de vetste spareribs in de geschiedenis van ondergetekende zagen we een groep Nederlanders met een Pub Crawl t-shirt. Dat leek ons wel wat, misschien leek deze stad nog ergens op als je het vanaf de goot bekeek. Na veel gehaast kwamen we wat aan de late kant aan, we hadden nog maar 30 minuten in plaats van een uur voor het onbeperkt drinken (bier, vodka en absint) maar we hadden met zijn vijven wel de hele bar en twee barkeepers voor ons alleen. Uiteindelijk werd dat half uur toch nog een uur gezien de hoge instroom van nog meer mensen. Van de volgende vier clubs en hun welkomst shotje kan ik mij dus bar weinig herinneren. Het eerste dat ik weer weet is dat ik vijf minuten in de grootste club van Oost-Europa was en ik het zo kut vond dat ik maar weer naar buiten gelopen ben. Eenmaal buiten bedacht ik mij dat mijn vrienden nog binnen waren en deed een poging ze daar toch nog te vergezellen. Echter had de uitsmijter hier niet veel zin in dus daar stond ik dan. Katjelam in een onbekende stad zonder enig idee waar ik was en welke kant mijn hostel op was. Mijn vrienden bellen lukte ook niet echt, iets met dat mijn pincode drie keer verkeerd ingedrukt was door één of andere randdebiel. Op miraculeuze wijze wist ik de grote straat vlak bij ons hostel, en daarmee ons hostel terug te vinden. Na minimaal 27 gesprekken met lelijke Tsjechen die mij het casino in probeerde te lullen stond ik daar voor een dichte deur van de passage naar ons hostel. Tyfus takke kut, dat was waar ook. De passage ging ’s nachts dicht en er was een achteringang. Ik heb alles in mijn dronken macht aan gedaan om deze te vinden. Ik wil niet weten hoeveel mensen in aangesproken heb om te vragen waar deze ingang dan wel niet moest zijn. Uiteindelijk had een propper van stripcblub Hot Peppers als enige medelijden met mij en verwees me naar de politie die verderop stond. Maar als je dronken bent vindt je dat geen goed idee natuurlijk dus mijn speurtocht ging verder. Uiteindelijk kwam ik een groep Denen tegen. Zij wisten ook niet waar mijn hostel was maar ze hadden wel een goede oplossing. Ik zou met hun de stripclub in gaan, tegen de tijd dat we er uit kwamen zou de voordeur weer open zijn. Zoals je, je al kunt bedenken heb ik de nacht van mijn leven gehad en die Denen hebben mijn eerste biertje nog betaald ook. Een korte tijd later liep ik netjes door de voordeur mijn hostel binnen, klopte op de deur en een brakke dame verwelkomde mij in mijn eigen kamer. Een paar uur later werd ik wakker.

Vriend: ‘Maar wij zijn nog zeker drie uur gebleven en je kwam echt een paar uur later dan ons terug’
Ik: ‘Uh ja, stripclub’
Onze ochtend met een lach beginnen is gelukt zoals je zult begrijpen. Na het hele verhaal te hebben verteld waren mijn vrienden behoorlijk jaloers op mijn avontuur. Maar goed, ik had voor de tweede keer in mijn leven een kater, en deze was dikker dan een walvis op een zeehondendieet. In tegenstelling tot de meeste mensen wil ik blijkbaar graag eten als ik een kater heb. We hebben dus een leuk tentje op een dakterras van een groot winkelcentrum uitgezocht en tot mijn verbazing stond er kebab op de kaart. Die keuze was snel gemaakt dus. Hetgeen dat ik geserveerd kreeg was geen broodje vlees van een rol. Maar zoals ik zei, ik ben geen kebabkenner dus ik heb schijt. De twee spiesen en de salade waren stukken lekkerder dan die ongein in Berlijn en het bier erbij stukken groter. Ik kreeg zelfs nog een gratis Jack Daniels van de barman omdat ik een Jack Daniels shirt aanhad, die kater was zeer kundig weg gedronken dus. Uiteindelijk zijn we nog met zijn allen naar de stripclub gegaan. Ik kan je vertellen dat de vrouwen die avond minder knap waren, ondanks dat het waarschijnlijk dezelfde als de dag ervoor waren. Het leukste was nog wel de Denen die er weer zaten ‘Look, the guy with the awesome shirt came back!’.
Krakau, de volgende stad op het lijstje is naar mijn inziens de tegenPool van Praag. Een stad vol vriendelijke jonge mensen en een bruisend nachtleven zorgen ervoor dat dit mijn beeld van Polen in Nederland ten goede veranderd heeft. Met name één Pool in een kledingwinkel heeft hier een grote bijdrage aan geleverd. Na het vragen waar wij vandaan kwamen zei hij ‘Oh, good country The Netherlands, my friend work there on chicken farm, very good pay, he buy BMW’. Maar goed, kebab. Die had je hier voldoende en de prijs was ook prima. Als ik het goed uitreken kwam een broodje gemiddeld op €2.50 en dan had je een prima maaltijd (zie foto bovenaan het verhaal). Als de samenwerking van mijn geheugen en Google Maps het goed heeft dan hebben we een broodje genomen bij een tent aan de Plac Szczepanski, een zijstraat van het grote plein in de binnenstad. Er was keuze tussen kip en rund. Natuurlijk heb ik voor rund gekozen. Dat vlees viel ietwat tegen, maar het broodje, de sla en vooral de saus waren keihard aan. Verder blijft Krakau een kort verhaal, het enige dat ik nog te melden heb is dat ik de befaamde goedkope Poolse hoeren niet ben tegengekomen, waarschijnlijk zijn zij allemaal naar Nederland. Maar de Playboy is daar wel goedkoop. Vooral dat interview met Justin Timberlake is goed, denk ik, mocht ik ooit Pools leren.
Een korte nacht slaap in een nachttrein die vele malen beter was dan die van Praag naar Krakau waren we op een veel te vroeg tijdstip in Bratislava. Maar blijkbaar vinden de mensen het hier doodnormaal om rond 5.30 massaal te verzamelen op het station om zo’n gammele tram of bus naar het werk te nemen, respect. Het hostel waar we aankwamen was stukken minder dan de werkdrift van de mensen hier. Na vijf minuten in het oude vervallen gebouw te hebben gewacht tot de receptiemedewerker zijn sigaret op had alleen om ons te kunnen vertellen dat de prijzen toch hoger waren dan op internet stond zijn we maar weggegaan. Een goede keuze, want voor dezelfde prijs hadden we uiteindelijk een best luxe hostel in de binnenstad geregeld. Verder is Bratislava niet heel boeiend. De binnenstad is heel mooi maar ook zeer klein en alles daar buiten is één grote Oostblok flattenwijk. De drank was goedkoop als je goed zocht, dus die twee dagen daar waren uitermate goed te doen. Het enige leuke wat ik kan vertellen is die grote rits windmolens achter wat vermoedelijk de Oostenrijkse grens is. Die dingen zeiden letterlijk ‘Hahaha, fuck jullie Bratislava deze lelijke windmolens kunnen het stadsbeeld toch niet verder verpesten. Groeten, Oostenrijk.’. Het ging in Bratislava constant mis met het verorberen van kebab. Uiteindelijk heb ik in de laatste uurtjes nog snel een kebabontbijt kunnen scoren bij de enige kebabtent op het station. Niet duur en prima ontbijt.
Het eindpunt van onze reis was Boedapest, om precies te zijn Sziget. Ik kan jullie eindeloos vervelen met verhalen over deze prachtstad en dat fantastische weekje cocktails drinken met goed achtergrondmuziek maar dit verslag is al tweehonderd keer langer dan jullie zouden willen. Na Sziget hebben we nog een flinke tijd in Boedapest gebruik gemaakt van de bijzonder lage voedsel- en vochtprijzen. Meerdere keren per dag kwamen we dan langs de Star Kebab bij tram- en metrohalte Oktogon. Dagen heb ik lopen zeuren dat ik daar een broodje moest en zou eten. Het was de eerste tent van de vakantie die ik er echt uitnodigend uit vond zien. Dat broodje is helemaal goed gekomen, de foto helaas niet. Mijn reisgenoten hadden zich verstopt in de McDonald’s aan de overkant, hufters. Hoe dan ook, er was geloof ik keuze tussen rund en kip. Ik ben ondanks mijn vorige ervaring weer voor het rund gegaan en moet zeggen hier geen spijt van te hebben. Het broodje was verrukkelijk. Heel veel keuze in extra’s en sauzen en bijzonder lekker. Zelfs de verdeling was goed gedaan. Mocht je in Boedapest zijn en zin hebben in een broodje kebab is dit een aanrader, vind ik dan als iemand die geen verstand heeft van kebab maar wel van dood dier houdt. Een goede afsluiter van de vakantie dus. En ik weet waar ik volgende zomer mijn broodje kebab weer ga halen na Sziget.
